954/929 brake mods?
954/929 brake mods?
So I finally broke down and started purchasing parts for my front end swap, and I figure if I'm going to do the swap I want everything on point the first go around.
I puchased a set of 954 forks, and I am curious if anyone has tested different brake set ups on these front ends?
Or should I just stick with the stock 954 calipers and MC?
Thanks in advance

Yeah I didn't scower through the fireblades forum, just did a general google search and came up with nothing execpt for people swapping 954 calipers over to their 929's
One interesting thing I did find while seaching though which I'm not sure if anyone running an F4i set up on a hawk has tried, was swapping 954 pads into the F4i calipers. Said to give better feel, modulation, and longer pad life, due to the 2mm thicker pads the 954 runs.
Rotors are the same. are the calipers different? The only difference it that some of the 929 rotor carriers (Y2K ?) are anodized black while they are all gold on the 954s. I have 954 rotors and 929 calipers, maybe after 2003 the 954 for a bit more piston diameter.

The calipers and MC are different between the 929 and 954.
929: MC= 19mm piston Calipers= 34/30mm pistons
954: MC= 17.4625mm piston Calipers- 32/30mm pistons.
From everything I have read the 954 brakes are supposed to be much better than the 929 brakes. I have not tested either so that is just hear say for me.
954 pads on f4i brakes? Maybe I will try that next time I need pads.
Aren't the 954 forks the shortest of the swappables or is that the RC51? Are the 954s similar to the 1000RR?
If so the swap is a cake walk. Godspeed.

I'm doing this swap - 954 forks -2004 yokes-2004 calipers and master -2004 wheel and discs .
Custom caliper mount brackets . As the 2004 discs are 310 mm and not 330 mm like the 954. The reason I'm going with the smaller disc As the 954 disc warp to easy and is a common problem and I'll be radial :-) .
Also the 2004 front wheel is lighter unsure by how much tho .

I'm not to sure which is the shortest set of forks..... I know that the 954 front end bolts up pretty easy with the use of the gull winged triple. I just have to figure out what I will do clip on wise, and for that I have some ideas.
Actually I found a hohey top triple tree, it has an extra 1 inch drop from the stock 954 gull wing triple. Meaning I will be able to run my clip ons above the top triple with out dropping the front end any.
Still going to have to play with some different clip ons to get the rise that I would like but may be able to spend a little less than buying a new set of apex, but then again might end up spending more.
Still toying with some ideas here, nothing final except for the 954 forks. So we shall see.

Stock 929 clip-ons work just fine.
