Depending on the air temp, 75-85c is normal.

Nice build, how's the exhuast sound? got a video?

 

I decided to change the rad to a Suzuki SV one for better steering lock, this one runs 2 deg cooler also. Dont ask me why????

 

Beautiful bike Pap. Why did you choose to go with a busa front end and not stick with the VTR front end? What did you gain from that?

 

The VTR front end is weak, under sprung, wobbly and generally gives vague feedback when riding at even a mildly spirited pace.

I really liked the performance improvement going to a 954 front end on mine gave back when I did it. I am sure he did it for similar reasons, and perhaps looks too.

I still want more details on that front end due to me getting one this past weekend. When it comes to the bearings, does he mean he used the honda bearing for the top of the tree and the busa bearing for the bottom of the tree? And as far as the wheel, what exactly did he do with the wheel? Did he use the busa wheel or the hawk wheel? If the hawk wheel, where did he come up with the spacers for it?

well if I recall correctly you call AllBalls All ***** All ***** Racing for your bearings, they will have to custom cut the top one for you, but the bottom one you can use a standard one. And if you compare that front wheel to your stock VTR one you will see that it is not the same, so I would assume that is the Suzuki one.

 

Yeah I'm seeing that now. I looked up the bearings for the hayabusa and the hawk and it turns out the only one that's different is the top bearing. So I'll get on the horn today with All ***** and see if I can get a bearing made here real soon. Those forks are supposed to be showing up sometime this week or early next week.

 

That's a damn shame that he's selling that amazing bike. I love the way this bike is styled and built.

 

By the way, this is for any person in the future who wishes to put a busa front end on this bike, the bearing is 40 dollars from All ***** and within the next week they are ordering 200 of them specific for this swap. Mark your calender's folks. Understand that there are only 199 left out there as I have already reserved mine.

 

Hi Brothers of the Bike, Sorry I have been a little late in getting back to the USHF but I have been busy building a little 2 smoker I bought as a basket case. It is a Yamaha 400 and the guy had stripped every nut and bolt from the thing, threw it in a box, then left it for 3 years. I bought it a couple of months back and built another Cafe.
My wife wants some of these furkin bikes out of my shed that is why I threw the VTR1000 up on ebay, so I will see if it goes, I dont really want to part with it as its a real blast to ride!!

To answer a few questions, I used a complete Busa frt end(wheel, axle inc) I had to fabricate the frt guard. The calipers are 6 spot Busa , which slam your face into the deck when you think the brakes on.. The rotors are Chinese Ebay and work fine.
The bearings are as the other guys said, available from All ***** or just wobble down to your loocal bearing shop, then slam them on the counter with the inner and outer measurements,, simple really.

A few things, first of all both of those bikes are incredible, lots of talent there.
Second, I read this yesterday and am still chuckling about it, thank you.

Finally,that 400 is beautiful, I just finished an R5 last year. Where did those scoops on the top of the heads come from, I've never seen those before? I would have a hard time getting rid of either bike after putting all that time and work into them.

 

Thanks all for the encouragement, its fun to create! The cylinder head is a yamaha item called a "Daytona" head and was used on a model released in the USA.

 

Has anyone fitted these rams with a K&H high flow air filter and had to change the jetting much?

 

I haven't used that filter but have tuned for those stacks. There are two ways to approach the issue depending on what jet kit (if any) you have used.

The issue is normally you now have a rich mid-range. So you can either go down one size on the mains (with a DynoJet kit) or plug one lift hole in each slide with a FactoryPro or HRC kit (or modified stock bits)

 

I love what you've done with that RD. For a little while I was looking at getting a GL1100 and doing the whole cafe racer thing with but after reading a post on my home forum about little bikes being loads of fun in the corners due to carrying more speed, I'm thinking about getting a littler bike like that. Love the build. Do another one!

 

Well the VTR has been sold to a Great biker on the Gold Coast not far from me. This guy has had his collection of Laverdas and been around bikes most of his life by the looks of the pics he showed me.
Unfortunately he has the battle wounds of years gone by, and showed me a nasty scar on his wrist, from a accident, so I hope the cafe build is not too hard on his wrists.

Make sure you post up here on your build! I recently got a hold of a 1975 CB750 SOHC FRAME! I'm completely starting from the ground up on the build so it's going to be interesting. I'll post up pics of my build somewhere and be sure to clue you in on where it is. Can't wait to see what you build next!

 

Good on you Josh, Those old 750/4 were pretty solid and a great old base to start with. I am surprised also at the amount of parts new, that you can still acquired for those beasts!

I did change the front fork brace on my little smoker to a alloy guard that I hand made, I know this will get through Rego easier.

 

great photos and a neat project. I went the same route with my beemer. It was fun and the bike was one of a kind. Now it's gone and I'm happy as can be with the hawk the way it is. That last project took all my cash and energy. I think I'll just ride a while. Can't wait to see the finished bike!
