New Paint
New Paint
Never painted a bike before and thought I would give it a whirl. Bought this hawk with a Blue/Purple/Green paint on it that would change colors depending on the angle of light hitting it. 90% of the time it looked purple and just bugged the living daylights out of me.
The paint I used was Dupli-Color Pre-Mixed Laquer. Red, White, and a Neon Green. My inspiration was the Ducati MotoGP team bikes from this season. Wanted it to be a lot whiter, but got carried away with the green and red. I have heard comments that it looks like the italian colors, mexican colors, and just yesterday...a practice tennis ball.
The hardest part of all of this was getting the old paint off the bike. The previous owner had painted over the original paint and you could tell in certain areas that there was a lot of buildup which drove me nuts. I used a palm sander on the fairings and plastic, then paint thinner on the tank. In doing so I found about a pound of bondo on the left side of the tank which I then had to repair.
I did this in about two weekends. It was right when we were having our first few warm days of spring and I just lost patience with the whole project because I wanted to get back on the road.

Minimizing the green and expanding the white will improve the look drastically. It's hard on the eyes because green and red together are the hardest two colors for the human eye to see when next to each other.
LOL, no sweat. The colors are a bit off in the after picture. It is more of a bright, lime green, no so pea'ish.
If you look at the current Ducati MotoGP team bikes, the colors are almost spot on with that. Almost...
Was thinking about redoing it in just white with green and silver. I am having problems thinking of colors to go with the gold wheels.
