Instrument cluster on a naked fighter?
Instrument cluster on a naked fighter?
What do guys generally do with the instrument cluster on a naked fighter build? The oem is so bulky and sticks out so far. Thanks for any help.
If you have an older cluster, you can trim it down by removing the speedo. There's also the option of swapping in a newer CBR gauge set. They are fully contained and much smaller than our stock units. To alleviate the amount that it sticks out, most people make/buy a custom bracket to mount it to the fork legs.
Think I need to crash course on welding haha. Seems making my own parts would be much easier. 7moore7, is that some variation of your advice on your build? Very nice by the way.
I'm using a cbr f4i gauge on mine, most of the wires are directly compatible, you just have to line them up in the plugs (which takes a couple of wiring diagrams and a little patience, but isn't hard at all). Picked it up for under 100 bucks at a junkyard and the thing is very small and works well. People have done it on here with 929rr and 1000rr gauges as well.
I haven't done a single bit of welding on my bike! It's on the list of skills to learn, but takes time, facilities, and proper instruction and I haven't lined the three of those up yet. You'd be surprised what you can make with metal shears and aluminum sheeting and a few bolts. And make it look good! Also, if all else fails, zip tie the snot out of it.
I can't remember who, but someone on here cut their speedo off, covered the hole and the gauges looked really good. Significantly smaller and very unique. Plus there's a cool factor to not having a speedo...

Hell, everytime I look at the speedo I'm going over the limit anyway without realizing it. I've already mastered the art of the zip tie lol. I work in commercial and industrial roofing so I'm a pretty fair hand with snips and sheet metal. We have a fairly large metal shop and even have a stick welder in there. Hmm..... Thanks for all the info though and good job on the work.
I want to put one of these on. Updates the look and I think its pretty bitchin"

Aja, so wire feed is a better set up? My dog probably knows more about welding than me lol. All joking aside I understand the concepts but I just need to practice(screw up some stuff....) sounds like there are many options to the cluster setup so i guess it's trial and error.
If you don't know how to use a welder, it makes the easiest one to start with, but you can make fairly ugly welds... But if you know what you are doing, you can put a cheap wire feed to shame...
I am what's wrong with a stick welder. Not that any other is better, I just always did terrible welds with a stick and found a wire feed to be easier to use. My dad still uses his stick all the time and he does amazing welds, I usually end up with big gobs of slag and an uneven bead.
Koso is what I went with, its quite a bit smaller than stock, I've got pics in this thread of it mounted with no bodywork.......
