Anyone try painting the little engine cover?

If by "little engine cover" you mean the plastic piece over the oil filter, I have seen a photo of a red one here recently where it was painted to match the rest of the bodywork. I think it looked very good and I am considering doing the same.

ahhh sorry, yes I can see that "little engine cover" is not a very accurate way to describe what I was referring to - which is indeed the oil filter cover.
I've been pondering getting some base/clear dupli-color paint and trying to match it to the bodywork

When I was talking to the guy I bought my Chinese fairings from, he asked me if I wanted that little piece painted the stock silver color or the same blue as the rest of the bike. I did mockups in photoshop and in the end I decided that it didn't look good being the same color as the rest of the bike, it looks like it's kind of just stuck on there with no purpose. When it's silver I think it helps to separate it from the main bodywork. Now for a lower full cowl, I'd say matching colors are a must.

Could you post some closeup pics of your Chinese fairing pieces? They look good in the ads and I can't tell how they appear mounted. What's you opinion over all?

Any body-shop should be able to pull the mixture codes for you and you can have it mixed at Napa for around $30 (in aerosol cans, possibly cheaper if you just buy the quart).
The color has probably faded quite a bit, but since the chin fairing doesn't reside anywhere near the rest of the body work I don't think the difference would be noticeable to the naked eye.

If you remove the seat from the bike.. On the sub-frame rails that the undertail is supported by.. There should be a white tag, with black letters.. Should be-- Y124P , which is Honda's "Pearl Shining Yellow".. If your bike is still OEM paint..

As long as it's the stock color you can get it from colorrite.com. As was stated your paint code is on a decal on your subframe. In your case stock yellow is Y124P "pearl shining yellow."

I had a bodyshop match up the stock yellow on a '99 I rebuilt and for pretty cheap they painted both side fairings and the tail to match a stock tank, headlight fairing, and solo seat cover, and it was at least a 95% match. It's a hard color to get perfect with the pearl & all but you can't tell from the pictures. But I wouldn't be so concerned about the match if you're just painting the chin cowl-it doesn't butt up against anything else where you're going to notice a tiny shade difference.
