James' 2001 Honda VTR1000 Build

This hose is fed from the top of the radiator neck, right below the radiator cap, coming out of the little nipple. I fed it to the bottom of the bottle, with a slash cut at the end of the tubing. Is this correct? The top of the cap has a vent hole in it, which just vents to open air.

Yes, i need to install an overflow hose
I checked the coolant level tonight while on the sidestand, and topped it off. Took about an ounce.
I'll give more details as i change the overflow a bit...

The vent hole is what I used for the overflow hose.
I used clear plastic tubing and ran it inside the frame down to the left hand front of the engine where all the other drain hoses go.
Don't push it all the way to the bottom of the bottle or it will act as a siphon.
When I first fitted it I put it right to the bottom and it drained the coolant.
Place it up high to allow for the fact that the cooling system may expel some coolant into the bottle during operation.
That way it won't siphon.
Works for me.
Fit an overflow line James and all will be well.

Okie dokie... Here is where i'm at... The HRC bottle is great, and gave me great insight, but i'm not gonna use it. (Anyone looking for one?)
I ended up ordering a 4oz rectangular wide mouth Nalgene bottle, and fabbing up a super-ugly (temporary) aluminum bracket...
I mounted the bracket to the bottom of the airbox using the exidting threaded hole and phillips screw (remnants from the PAIR removal).
The Nalgene bottle is tilted to match the angle of the air intake shroud edge.
Here is a picture, which is most likely better than any words I could use.

Much better than the way you had the HRC.
That's why mine is in the tail.
Love the red Rocker Covers.
James,
You have certainly upped the ante with this build.
Congrats, your bike is cool. You must be very happy.
I am still working on the thermo by the way!
Why not put it in the bike of the month?
It certainly is an inspiration for me.

Thank you so much
I've thought about bike of the month, but i want to do a few extra touches first. Maybe later in the year...
Did an 85 mile ride today with friends. Bike rode awesome. New Bridgestones are amazing. No more numbness in my hands with the new tires!
I was so excited just to ride it. It was an amazing day.

Here is another cool pic of the front end...
I also have smoked front turn signals on the way, which will help black out that area real well...
I'm really hoping to get the flywheel cover powdercoated flat black soon...

Installed Lockhart Phillips Flush Mount III smoked single filament turn signals today on the front... I didn't particularly like the orange lenses, and Lockhart gave me a great deal on these.
I was originally going to install something much smaller, but when the orange lensed signals were installed before they left screw marks in the fairing, so I had to keep that covered up.... So I ended up with the same thing in smoke, minus the running light, which I didn't like either.
I suppose now I have an extra wire left over for a charging cable lol.

James, make them into running lights as well as blinkers with just a simple diode in line. Convert 2 wire signals to 3 Wire Inputs - CBR Forum - Enthusiast forums for Honda CBR Owners

I'm not gonna run anything. I like it exposed that way.
I use Maxima chain wax and it doesn't fling at all. I've been using it for 15 years and i just love it. The chain stays lubed and my bike stays clean...

Since the last post i have done the following:
Resynced the carbs
Rerouted the choke cable
Installed a new air filter
Set my rear brake light switch so it doesn't come on when i trail brake in corners
Tightened the steering head bearings (again)
Ground the nubs off the clip on handlebars (now i can really adjust them however I want)
Gone through a tank of gas mixed with Seafoam
Rerouted a couple hoses and wires so they aren't laying on the red cam covers
Hoping to ride it more late this weekend and next week... Interested to see how the new air filter affects cold startup...

I love your attention to detail. I have been keeping my eyes open for a 6 spoke front wheel for you.
If you want to keep going with the black, next time you do an oil change, take your oil cooler and lines off. It's pretty easy. I sanded the chrome off my lines, hit them with metal etching primer and painted them black. Used Dupli-Color and in the last two years or so, they look just like the day I painted them.

That sounds very tempting!
I'm definitely going back to the Honda oil filter because it is black, and looking for a lower cowl that i can do in black...
The engine cases will remain silver. That will be a nice accent color.

I thought about what you said, blacking it out... That wasn't really my intention when i started. My goal is to clean everything up and make it look new, i just happened to choose black as the clean up color

Found a CBR600F3 front wheel last week. Guy happened to live near my dad in North Carolina. My dad picked it up today.
I'll ask him to ship it out this winter so i can powdercoat it black, along with the other parts on my list

It's a 6-spoke front wheel to match the CBR900RR rear wheel.
Turns out both the 95-98 CBR600F3 front wheel or 94-97 VFR750 front wheel are both the same, and both match the CBR900RR rear wheel. I just happened to find an F3 wheel because I posted a want ad on a CBR900RR/Fireblade forum

Just finished installing my 1.25" Woodcraft return spring! Also took a moment to install a new rear brake master cylinder rubber boot.
I removed the jam nut when installing the cup and spring so i could get more clearance to run the brake pedal even lower. I like running it low so I don't accidentally stab it. When I use it for trail braking it is low so i only apply a little bit of force, and now the return spring definitely improves the feel!
