a couple of trackday photos

first trackday of the season... sunny & 70 degrees.

had an odd cold tearing problem. i was a little high in pressure (1-2psi) but the track was pretty cold then i was spot on all afternoon. i was taking the outlap pretty fast... trying to grid up front & i wanted clear track until i got to the backmarkers. i love the hawk but getting yarded by the 600's these days sucks !

Really good look, Tim! You can only drive your own race with the equipment provided. You keep practicing form like that when you get that 1krr or the 1300 Superhawk you can show the punks what it's made from. Thanks for the photos!

Is that cold tearing? Looks a bit like hot tearing maybe. Were you on warmers?

no warmers. a cold tear looks like a fingernail print & a hot tear goes from the middle to the outside flaring away ( i think ). i need to get our local suspension guy to look at it. this is the first time this has happend. the only change i made was tighten up the front rebound 1/2 turn. although i'm running about 20lbs lighter and still have the rear spring on the softest setting.

we have a newly resurfaced track so i spent a couple sessions locating new brake & turn markers but after that i was REALLLLLY ham fisted. the hardest i've run it... the track is soooo smooth. when you drag your puck it feels like it's sliding on glass ! corsa dragon sc2 in the rear & sc1 up front & she stuck like glue !

(btw: the front tire has perfect wear)

How did other people's tires look? Is it just the new track surface?

At Thunderhill, we would roll big, sticky gumballs off the tires. At Reno-Fernley, the tires come out polished and smooth. Just from the different tarmacs.

Looks great! I wish I was there!

the old surface we had we'd ball 'em up pretty good but this new top is stated to be like miller - tires don't ball at all. should be good for tire life though.

As someone who has never been to the track or hardly even talked to someone who has, this jargon leaves me asking what is:

Outlap (first lap out of pits seems logical but is it before or after a flag, at speed, mass start...etc?)

Grid up front (be in first row for a mass start, in first couple rows ?)

Backmarkers (pretty sure this means the slowest riders)

Yarded (beaten by a yard? don't have a clue here)

Thanks for posting those pics. Very cool.

Man, my palms are all sweaty!

Here's a couple from the last time I scrubbed a set of tires.

Ouch! Was that at Jennings? Been there. There were a few turns that I hated.

Yeah, turn 7 I was making a pass on the outside when a slower rider decided to set up for 8 a little early. When were you down here and which turns gave you problems? Wish I knew I would've loved doing some laps with you, besides it's kind of my home track I could have shown you around a little.

****, it's been about 4 years since my one and only trackday there. It was a haul from VA. It'd be a waste of time from NY.

Honestly I don't remember the track that well. There was a back section that gave me some fits where the tarmac changed and there were a bunch of gouges in the pavement from dudes going down. The gouges alone made me paranoid.

Yeah I can imagine, it's about 5.5 hrs from here. I know that turn well, turn eight everyone takes it too early and tries to take it too fast tons of lowsides. It's probably the hardest one there, hence the gouges you have to turn in late so you don't have to hold the inside as long. Anyway back to your thread I'll stop jacking it now. BTW you can see my face shield on the track and me in the dust cloud right before the bike lands on my ankles.

yes, first lap is the outlap. on a trackday there isn't a warm up lap like a race, the track just goes green and the track marshal waves you onto the track. without tire warmers you should take a lap or two to get heat into the tire.

Grid up front (be in first row for a mass start, in first couple rows ?)

they don't do a mass start - they'll put a number of riders out every few seconds. they will announce your group, first call, second call etc.
here me in a video: you'll get the idea
http://www.rolandk.net/videos/motoco...08_s5_long.wmv

Backmarkers (pretty sure this means the slowest riders)

yes the slowest, if you grid late you'll have to work your way through the other riders. good for practicing passing but if your working on the entry of a specific corner you'd like to have clear track. if you get up front and are 1 of the faster riders you can usually get a couple laps before catching the backmarkers.

Yarded (beaten by a yard? don't have a clue here)

this term basically means your faster in the corners ( in the lead ) but people catch up & pass you on the straight ( because of a faster bike ).

Thanks for posting those pics. Very cool.

track days are way fun... once your a competent rider i highly recommend it.

Crap Mike! Did that happen on your birthday?

I'm sorry to see that. I hope you are ok.
If you're ok, how's the bike?

I'd like to think I can do it without crashing, but high-speed **** happens.
I hope you can get back out there soon.

No that was back in Dec 06, I was back on the track a month later then after the 3rd track day a month after that I found out I had 2 fractured legs and some torn legiments. E.R. didn't see it bike faired better than me, a little banged up but not bad at all, foot peg and cluth lever and some scratches. Just one of those things you chalk up to **** happens, just won't pass there again 2 riders same place same time.
I'm just now getting back to where I was out there as far as confidence.

Still fun as hell!
