Adding a new bike alongside the SH!

Ok, so I got bored with my ST1300. Great bike, no soul. I needed something that would let me go across country, explore around, etc. So on Tuesday, I'm picking up my new bike, to go next to the SH in the garage...

Cool, huh?...

A friend of mine has one. very nice bike. don't be suprised if you start riding the SH less and less - that new one you are getting even does a pretty good impersonation of a sports bike, touring bike, round town bike, cool bike.................
congrats

Its the BMW R1200GS Adventure. I had a R1200GS previously and got rid of it for the ST. Decided I like the Beemer a lot more, so this time I got the full out Adventure model. My last one took me FL-CA-FL and next year we're going to CO for a couple of weeks of adventure touring.

First week I had my last GS, I got stuck in traffic, hopped a foot high curb into a center median with soft grass and kept right on going (past a HD rider stuck in the same traffic). Very few big bikes you can do that with...never should have gotten rid of the last one...

Can't wait to get my hands on the new one!

Sweet, the GS would be my first or second choice for a new bike right now.
Also like the MG Griso 8v.
Have fun!!!!

At around 600 lbs wet, I wouldn't ride one of those off-road alone or out of cell phone range; although, I'm sure you're well aware of the weight having previously owned one.

I rode with another guy last weekend, he had a 650 GS. Said he rode it to Alaska and back! The one in the pic looks lower for some reason.

Nice...

You know a GS can travel offroad where I have trouble walking... It's probably got mountain-goat DNA mixed in somewhere...

yeh Superbling, I know all about the weight. Plenty of experience with my last one, and I've been off-roading, off and on, for about 35 years. I once rode my '76 XL350, knobbies and all, from Tampa, FL to San Antonio, TX. Still, I appreciate the words! A reminder from a good rider never hurts... :-)

I swear I think the Superhawk is like a gateway drug to Adventure bikes. I'm not sure what it is... The guy I bought mine from wanted to sell it to get an Adventure bike. I went and bought a Suzuki V-strom! I've heard of a few others either replacing or complementing their Superhawk with some form of dual sport. Isn't there someone on here with a KLR??

I think you're right. Between my SH as a go-fast I4 stoplight killer and now my mountain goat GS (thanks Tweety), I can do just about anything on a bike! BTW, the GS is a claimed 105 hp..I'm sure not at the rear wheel but I can still dust the HDs and a lot of other bikes. It actually handles pretty well in the corners as well; sort of like a motard on steroids...well, maybe not quite, but you sure can't drag anything...

I'll post a pic when I get it home...

You know a GS is what we crazy swedes consider an light offroad bike...

Well atleast my father and a few of his buddies... They should be old enough to know better, but that doesn't seem to stop them...

The three of them went along for a ride with me and a few friends... of the regular bunch I was the most "on-road" on a superduke with knobbly tires, altough no real offroad bikes where allowed... Only "adventure bikes"...

They showed up on a BMW K1200 LT/GT/RT respectively... We had a laugh as we were going on small gravel paths where there are no roads... and I do mean no roads... By the end of it we weren't laughing... The bloddy geezers kept up with us for the most part... Altough they had a few complaints about us hot ******* it in some of the gravelpits... Most of the time the paths was narrow enough to have the brushes hit the fairings on the big beemers on both sides...

Then on the road home we where taking asphalted roads... That was a big mistake... They dropped us like nothing and just dissapeared...

That part wasn't that difficult to imagine though... It has happened more than once on my favourite road that I was doing a rather good pace and then one of those old farts would slip past me with sparks flying from the pegs on one of those "busses"... It's downright embarrasing, that's what it is...

WAY too funny... They always say its not the bike, its the rider! You gotta watch out for those "old" guys. They can humble you pretty quick. We know one guy (gotten to be a good friend now) that most think is just a crotchety old geezer. Turns out once you know him, he's a great guy with a really dry sense of humor..Oh, and he rides 100k+ miles a year...has 300k+ on his current bike...

Well... The annoying part is that while they can almost keep my pace in the wider twists and turns... almost but not quite... If I really get my knee down or it's tight they get left behind... Once we hit the larger sweepers or straights... Forget it... They drop me without trying... I can't do 160+, they can... And I cant cruise at that speed for an hour... They can as long as there are no cops...

Altough I had fun the other day swapping bikes with one of the old guys, he wanted to try my "hooligan bike" as he put it... Now I was a bit leary of pushing it on a big bus with a retail at 8-9 times my bike... But I kept his pace mostly as he toyed around on mine...

Apparently he had fun... but complained that the ride was to harsh and to forward leaning for longer stints for him...
