Is it worth it?
Hi guys im new to the VTR World and New to this forum.
My girlfriends next door neighbor has a 1998 Red VTR1000F with 14,000 on the Odometer, It has a New motor in it that has about 3000 miles on it. It comes with Extra plastics ( He bought extra plastics so he wouldnt have to remove the old plastics while he painted it ) The Extra plastics are still unpainted. It comes with 2 Helmets, 2 Jackets. The bike is in great shape i looked it all over, Nothing wrong with the frame that i could tell. Has new fork springs, new fork valves, new chain and sprockets ect. The previous owner replaced alot of things before he sold it.
The reason it has a new motor in it. The Previous owner raced bikes, this was his " ride around town " bike. He said he beat on the previous motor and replaced the motor before he sold it to the guy that owns it now.
The guy that owns it now babies it. But with the way the previous owner treated it should i have it inspected by a Honda Dealership and me and him just split the cost of the inspection? I test drove it and it rides great, does not ever sputter and spit and i could not find a single thing wrong with it.
He wants $4000.00 for everything. Let me know what you think.

Sounds like a good ride to me and a fair price. I'm not sure about the dealer. Most of the kids that hang around the dealerships just don't have the seasoning that some of the folks on this board. Despite my short time here, they have certainly earned my respect. Hang around here for a few days and you'll see why. Let us know what you decide. What part of the country are you?

I live in south alabama.
Well the honda dealership i plan on taking it to has a great service tech. I know him well and he knows his stuff. I can take it to him, leave it for a hour and he will tell me if anything is wrong with it.

I can't see the bike or the condition of the bodywork, etc, but from what I now see superhawks going for $4k should be buying you a mint, LOW mileage '98, probably with some nice extra like exhaust, etc. My '98 has under 6k EASY miles on it, all the bodywork is perfect, jet hot 2bros header, carbon leovincis, corbin seat, ohlins shock, soon to have RC51 front end with matching 900rr rear wheel, has new-brakes, clutch, pirellis, 520 conversion, etc, etc, and honestly if I were to try and sell it I dont think I'd be getting much more than that for it. Don't be so quick to pay 4k for it, although the bikes really are worth it compared to what else you can get for the money...more like 3500 or so, or look elsewhere for a nicer bike if you're going to spend more. But you're looking at a superhawk so you're looking in the right direction. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Captain Chaos. I think i will start out at 3300 bucks cash in his face and see if he will bite. I dont think i will go over 3500. I done every sort of search within 350 miles of my area ( i live in south alabama ) and most go for 3800 and up. Honestly the condition of the bike looks flawless i could not find a single scratch on it.
I love a superhawk though. The sound of a V twin and the looks of it. When i took it for a test ride i enjoyed every second of it and never got over 60.
And nuhawk :P Im not in austin not even in that state =)

I realize that and that's why I say that all the good techs in Austin are not at the dealership. All you see at the dealerships in Austin is the kids with the spikey hair and big talk. They don't know ****. Good luck!

Yes, that's exactly my point. Unlike CaptainChaos, in Central Texas you take a mint bike = $4200 add Two Bros. Cans = $5200 add Michelin Pilots $5500 and so on. All the add-ons don't just come with the bike - they add on to the price of the bike. When I bought my Hawk there was 1 available in Austin, none in San Antonio, none in Houston and 5 available in Dallas/Ft. Worth. You go to ANY Honda dealership in the state they all have one - usually only one. Price is $7K and up.

Yeah usually you end up ahead paying a few extra bucks for a mint bike, because it often ends up costing more to fix something up even though it initially sounds like a good deal, plus if you have to add extras that may come with another bike. If the bike is as nice as you say plus you know it's history and previous owner, then if you can grab it for under 4k you should probably be doing ok.

You would probably be good starting at $3200 or $3300, but not go more than $3500 ish....besides, you know the old saying, cash moves mountains....lol... good luck...

if it has been cared for like you say
and with the extras (which you need to keep, or you might regret it later)
it doesnt sound like a bad deal to me, and if he is asking $4k, he'll take $3500

well, i dont know about the guy you're dealing with
but low-balling people is not often a way to get on thier good side, myself included
not much is more insulting than someone offering you 50 or 60 percent of your asking price
