Who wants CCT's

"Day late and a dollar short!" My APEs went in last weekend. I think this is great, DUC, that you are willing to help everyone out and the cost is definitely reasonable. I'll definitely keep you in mind. For such a young lad, you sure have a lot of talent!

Other than that it's a mileage/wear thing... the stock one's needs replacing with regular interwalls like oilchange (not that frequent though)...
I feel we are cluttering up this thread... Go read up on the issues others have had in older threads and all other questions you might have will likely have been adressed there already...

I think I'll take pair lucky #13!
whats the install like on these? I'll do a thread search, but what is the difficulty and time?
Got my SH from a buddy 16 months ago with 5,000 miles on it, it's an 04. I've lived on it through the past year every chance I get here in Indianapolis.

I'm interested in a set with the theory that I'm going to need them eventually? My Sh has 2900 miles on it, but I'm about to *** some super noob questions here.
I've never actually OWNED a motorcycle, I've just rode others.
1. Would someone mind explaining what the cct actually does?
2. How frequently would you say these needed to be replaced? I saw the post above saying periodically but can someone give me a more elaborate answer?
3. Would I be better off having a dealer do this for me? I'm all about DIY I did most of the work to the cars I've owned and if it's noob proof I'm all in.
Sorry for the seemingly stupid questions, but I gotta learn sometime right?

The CCT pushes on a steel slider that tensions the cam chain... Hence the name Cam Chain Tensioner... The cam chain needs to be able to move a little but not too much...
The stock CCT's are "self adjusting" meaning they are supposed to adjust for the wear on the chain... That works good, but unfortunately it incorporates a spring and some fiddly bits that break when worn...
And oilstarvation in the front cylinder mainly makes the wear on the front CCT a weak point... That seems to be the general consensus... Then there are lot of different theories as to how and why... Wheelies and general hard riding plays a part... and lots of other factors...
Honda has put wear limits on nearly every part in the service manual... All but this... I have seen some "addendum" (pretty sure that's the name?) in the papers at the local shop... (They let me poke around...I'm as crazy as they are...) Saying "recommending this and that mileage"... Can't remember the numbers right now but you have a long way left...
A manual CCT, like APE's or these, or a modified stock one, removes the spring and replaces it all with a solid bolt... It doesn't break, but needs adjustment, since it's not self adjusting...
As for noob proof... dunno... I'm a noob... I have only taken my bike (and engine apart) completely once... parts of it a few more... And a few parts might have been swapped out in the process... But that's just cuz I'm too dumb to know better...
But if you have some technical knowledge, go to the knowledge base... there are a good writeup on step-by-step basis... One advice though... It might seem overly complicated choosing the option to remove the cam cover on one cylinder... If you haven't done this before it's worth it... It makes life a lot easier and less nervous to fire it up afterwards...

Even with the o-ring there, after a few years the o-ring hardens and fails to seal. I tried replacing one but you have to stretch it over two nuts and by the time you've done that either the o-ring snapped or it's too big to start with. I ended up using RTV on the threads and that stopped the weeping for now. It just seems to me that if you're making a new product then why not make it better than what's out there. Even though I'm a mechanic, I have a limited knowledge of thread sealing devices. I'm thinking nylock nut with a sealing washer for the locknut, but then it'd be too difficult to turn with the limited space. Maybe you have some ideas.

Aha! Can you incorporate these into the design?
