what clutch to use?
so my clutch is toast in my bike, its just slipping like a fat kid at a free slippery thing convention. so im in the market for a new one. bastards arent cheap though. i picked up some ebc springs for a few bucks a short while back so now i just need clutch plates. my buddy recommended that i stay with oem honda plates in there, but its 150 bucks his cost for all 10 plates and the gasket. that sounds crazy, i wouldnt wanna see the normal customer cost on something like that. regardless i did some looking around on ebay and found an ebc setup

price seems decent for something that should be an upgrade. hes weary about aftermarket clutches because hes had bad luck with them and prefers to stick to oem clutchs, hell mine has about 27000 km on it and this last year i rode hard, clutched it up alot, tracked it and beat on it good so its due for a replacement. my question is, do i stick with oem or is there a cheaper alternative thats just as good? or better yet does someone know where i can get an oem plate kit from the states for less and just ship it to me. we get juiced a little here north of the boarder on parts for everything so saving a little money and buying from the states works for me

I have always used barnett racing clutches as replacements. Both of the links you posted look like good deals but I can tell you that the ebc is probably gonna be way stouter than the ferodo. (meaning stronger/ more durable). That is pretty cheap and your springs were probably fine anyway. Its a pretty strait forward job & its likely you wont need a gasket if you are careful. I didnt.
perfect thanks for the help guys. its the answers i was after
ive got ebc springs so im assuming theyre going to be an improvement over the factory stuff and ill buy one in the next week or so. gonna be to get on her in third gear and actually go somewhere

the rest of the bike is solid. the guy i bought it from put in a used motor with what he said was 15000 km. now it could have had 15000 or it could have had double, who knows, im going by what he says, and i was far from gentle with it. plus this year was pretty bad for clutch ups for for so that didnt help
im still bound to do the winter inspection to it make sure everything is still tight, we all know how the big twins like to rattle things loose

I wouldnt go with EBC. I have those in my hawk and i hate them...well not hate...but hard launching the bike has become impossible. It just bucks and surges at high rpm...
Basically made me walk away from the bike in disgust when i was at the drag strip cuz i couldnt get any decent times with it.
I'd stick with OEM. price difference isnt that bad if u can get them for 150.

interesting, good to know. although the chances of me going to the strip are slim, i know mine tends to want to lift me in the first 2 gears aggressively as i found out the last time i tried to do a pull against a buddy of mine so i probably wont ever drag it. but the info is good to know. i havent bought it yet, almost bought one the other night but work is a little slow right now and the toys need to wait a bit
the heavy duty springs helped me a lot on the track when under high rpms and hard accelleration. when I hit a straight, I'd be sliding between every gear waiting for it to grab. I only changed the springs and it made all the difference.
good to know. i wonder if all ebc springs are heavier duty than oem stuff.
ive got a buddy whos a machinist and hes also built some interesting one off stuff for his bikes. he was saying what hes done in the past was shaved down some sort of ring that brought the clutch packs in closer or tighter or something and its made them feel like new again. im not exactly sure 100% what he did as ive never had the clutch out so im not sure what he lathes down but hes done it to his dirt bikes and has had success. thought about doing that but i think new disks are a better option

I put a Barnett complete clutch in the 99' - (How to explain) Riding could be considered abusive- High RPM down shifts usually cause some rear tire stopping, some slide in the curves.
On the 2001 , I used the Barnett spring, and stock clutch plates. Little less abusive, (the wife stays on the back of bike) yet no problem with slipping.
I would think, Uchi really come down to how much HP, you predict your going produce out of your engine...

i think the way it is now is how its going to stay. unless i blow the motor i likely wont open it up and tinker with it. i just want a clutch that will take some abuse from track and street use. i like the idea of stiffer springs with the stock plates
