v-twin riding feel

Hello everyone, I have just purchased a 1998 SH with 60k miles. The bike sounds awesome although it has strong vibes through acceleration and my hands and arms are numb just by riding 7-8 miles around the block. Is this the v-twin world or should I check something?
Thanks,
David

Definitely not the bike (assuming its running right). I have done many, many 300mile + trips on my Hawk and I feel perfect at the end of the ride, aside from the usual mental fatigue. Most I ever did was over 520 miles in a day, all the way down into WV, into VA, and back home. What a ride!

Sounds like your wrists are at a bad angle, or something of the like. Might want to look into Heli bars to raise em up alittle bit to take some of the weight off them.

A properly running Superhawk is actually pretty smooth. You'll feel the v-twin vibes (in a good way) through the bike, but nothing like you describe. A good place to start would be to make sure it's running on both cylinders and make sure the carbs are in sync.

Thanks for the info...I will search for a write-up about the carbs. I know the previous owner said he installed Dyno jets.

Try squeezing the tank with your legs while you ride and keep your weight off your hands. It takes a while to get used to if you already have a bad habit.

With 60k, I'm sure something needs to be replaced (wheel bearing, crank, steering head bearings).

Sounds like something is up. I never get fatigued from vibrations. After 7 or 8 miles the vibes are getting to you? That seems excessive. The SH is pretty smooth if running right.

I also have a 1999 VFR that seems very smooth compared to the VTR. I always wanted to try a V-Twin but not sure if it should "thump" as hard while acceleration. If I just cruise and keep the throttle held it runs smooth, only when I accelerate does it "thump" very hard???

My right hand goes to sleep after about 10 miles of cruising. If I'm on and off the gas a lot it's ok, but steady throttle position does it. I've almost wrecked a couple times when I grabbed way to much front brake because I hand no feeling in my fingers.

Update: I just found the front diaphragm has a hole in it and the slide did not open during acceleration. I think (hope) this is my problem...I will order a new diaphragm and find out.

I temporary taped the hole in diaphragm with electrical tape so I could go on a test ride. Wow what a difference, the VTR pulls hard. I just bought the bike and did not know the potential. I was going to sell it but now I think it is a keeper! I found carb diaphragm on hondaparts.com for $69.32, is this a good price or anyone know a better place to get them?
Thanks,
David

www.servicehonda.com is $1 cheaper. Probably not worth it since they usually take about 3-4 days longer than most.

Numbness in my fingers was cured by rearranging the fit of my riding jacket. It pinched a nerve under my arm.

I tested a VFR just prior to buying my VTR, the motor of the four felt really busy. What sold me on the twin was the visceral sensations transmitted through the pegs and the bars. Yeah, a perforated diaphragm causes funk in the feel of things, but when we learn to listen to our machines they will communicate to us what's going on inside of them.

What made you open the carbs?

The hawk was real crazy for me at first as I had the same problem as you but it just went away after a while you might need to get used the ride.

Personally, I like it when I scoot my crotch all the way against the tank. MAN, that feels good!

What do you do during the long winter months? Orbital sander while cruisin' the net?

Actually my 83 R100RS gave me much more visceral sensations than the SH.

Visceral sensations, vibration in the crotch..... Man, you all need to go c rank a little harder in the corners, or pull a few more wheelies. Sounds to me like you boys aren't "relieving" enough stress.....

Sorry Tweety, I couldn't help myself.

GW, during the winter months my wife knows that she is back in my life. As soon as spring hits I spend most of my time either in the garage or on one of the bikes.

Matt, dude we gotta get together and I'll let you ride the converted 'Hawk. Remember the stability of the 1000RR? Well, combine that with the flickability of the 'Hawk and that's what I have now. If you didn't work so damned much.....
Oh, and I'm really itching to do that swingarm brace. Now that I'm comfortable with the fork swap I'm ready to evaluate the the effects of the brace. Whenever you're ready. I'll buy the beer!
