Running rich...First thing to check?

I believe my 98 Superhawk is running rich. When stopped, I smell exhaust and am getting miserable mpg (26-30). I know this bike is by no means a fuel sipper, but that mpg seems a little low. I'm not riding it very hard, either.

With that being said, what should I check first? The air filter? The carbs?

Thanks for your help!

I ride like grandma and still only see about 32mpg. I get on it every once in a while, but not often.

If its flooding and didn't used to the first things I would check would be is your air filter obstructed/excessively dirty? if the engine cant suck air it will suck extra fuel through the jets.

I'd also check to see if maybe your float needles have gone bad and the fuel flow to the carbs doesn't shut off properly when they are full, this could cause extra raw fuel to dump in the cylinders.

Also check and make sure that the choke isn't hanging open due to a broken or sticky cable going to one of the carbs.

Those would be my first checks anyway

You should check the pilot jets. They control most of the fuel economy and I've often found people go with larger than stock when #45 (stock) is ideal for most applications, even with pipes. Try backing off the slide needle to a richer position too. This all assumes a jet kit is in there - that's about the only reason you would be running rich like that. If it is 100% stock then you have another problem all together.

Yeah even with #48s I average 35-40mpg's so that mpg is a little low for a stock bike.

Hello, had the same problem recently and solved it by just cleaning the carb and filter. Another thing to inspect is the type of fuel you are using, my hawk hates ethanol based fuel.
