Revised gear ratios in 05 Superhawk?
Hi All,
I am the proud owner of a new Titanium color 05 Superhawk. I posted a question about Rpm at 70 mph on another post and also a question about gas mileage. The response I got to my question was 4300 rpm at 70 mph and about 38 mpg.
I am turning 3700 rpm in 6th at 70 mph and 4000 rpm at 75. I have also been getting 50 mpg at 70 on the highway. This makes me wonder if they didn't revise the gear ratio's on the newer models because this isn't what I expected from reading topics on this forum.
Needless to say, I am very pleased with this kind of mileage. Of course this is all on the highway but that is where I spend 90 percent of my time commuting to work.
Is anyone with a newer model Superhawk seeing these kinds of numbers?

Re: Revised gear ratios in 05 Superhawk?
I said mine was turning 4300 at 70 MPH and I thought it was geared too high so I went up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket. I like it much better, easier to ride at low speed and more spunk passing cars. Mine now has 1300 miles on it and the mileage has gone up to 40 mpg.

It's gotta be in the transmission somewhere. Anybody got the gear ratios? The sprockets are still listed a 16/41 stock, which is the same as my '02. The online microfiche at service honda doesn't show anything different for the '05 transmission, but I'm not sure I'm looking at it correctly. 50mpg is nuts, considering the best I've seen is 38 when I was averaging 65-70mph on rural highways (instead of 80-85 on the interstate).

Right. I just can't find any difference between the 04 and 05 models, because I'm not sure I'm looking at the part correctly. Anybody headed to a dealership in the near future could ask the parts counter guys...

Spot the difference
Gear ratios for 2005:
Primary reduction: 1.681 (74/44)
1: 2,733 (41/15)
2: 1,812 (29/16)
3: 1,428 (30/21)
4: 1,206 (35/29)
5: 1.080 (27/25)
6: 0.961 (25/26)
1998:
Primary reduction 1.681 (74/44)

4: 1,206 (35/29)
5: 1,080 (27/25)
6: 0,961 (25/26)
To Woodman: are you sure you have standard sprockets ratio? Sprockets make way more instant difference than gearbox...
I can confirm that my stock geared 1997 Shawk sits at around same 3700-3800 rpm at 70 mph. I just never drive 70 on highway since speed limit is a bit higher (120 or 130 kmph) and everybody adding about 10 kmph on top by default But I tried and can say for sure that 4300 rpm is a bit to high for 70 mph IMHO, but then I have speedo in kmph and mght've misread it

Re: Revised gear ratios in 05 Superhawk?
Well that explains that the gearing is the same but I can't explain the gas mileage. I live a mile from the interstate, 23 miles to work and work is about a mile off the interstate so maybe that is it.
My bike is new and stock with about 350 miles on it now.

I could be wrong on the RPM, Maybe I was in 5th and did'bt know it.
I m going on a long ride this weekend, I'll check my RPM again and see what it is. I'll have to use the GPS to check speed since I changed the sprocket.

Yes, twisty roads just how I like it. Going to Fayetteville this weekend for the Beer, Bikes, and BBQ rally so I will see plenty of twisties.

Re: Revised gear ratios in 05 Superhawk?
Checked my speed and RPM this weekend. At 70 mph the motor is turnung 4500rpm in 6th gear. I stated before that it was turning 4300 rpm with the stock gearing. I now have a 43 tooth rear so that would account for the extra 200 rpm. One day I will have to take the cover off the front sprocket and see what it is. I bought the bike new so I would think it would be a 16 tooth.

My '02 gets about 40-43mpg with mostly highway trips and is stock gear ratios. Have you verified your odometer against a known distance? some areas have posted mile markers on the highways and if your odometer is registering a calibrated mile as 1.1 or 1.2 miles it will give you the impression of better fuel mileage - it could also explain the difference in RPMs and relative speeds. if it states you are doing 70 but you are only doing 63 mph there would e a difference. see if you can pace yourself with a buddy in a car or another bike to compare.

Re: Revised gear ratios in 05 Superhawk?
Another way to check speed accurately is with a GPS. They are very accurate. Thas how I got my RPMto speed numbers because I knew most speedos are off.
With stock gearing my SH speedo read 4 mph fast at 60 mph. Now with the 16/43 gearing it reads 9 mph fast at 60 mph. To accurately check my fuel mileage I will have to use the odometer in my GPS to get accurate distance traveled.
