Powder Coating Rim

I am looking to powder coat my rims, and was wondering if the bearings can be pulled and reused?

Thanks,
Sean

Yes the bearings have to be pulled and can be reused. What color are you going with?

Good luck

Has anyone here done it? I am in the same position and need to know if this is something I can do myself or if I need to have someone do it for me.

I am going with a High Gloss black. Looks like I am going to attempt pulling them myself. I have already added thed following:

Jardine RT1 Carbon High Mounts
Sharkskinz Lower
Flush mount signals
Fender Elimantor
Michlein Pilot Road Tires

Sound be set for a nice summer riding season.

You need a blind bearing puller to get the berings out. Motion Pro has some available. I got mine from Snapon not cheap. You can also take the wheels to a bike shop and they will do it for around $60.

IMO, buying the part to pull them out will be more expensive than just buying new bearings. There's a guy on ebay that I got mine from when I had mine powdercoated. Here's the ebay item number: 250092615078 Only $18 + shipping. They worked perfectly. IMO, it's not worth the risk of possibly damaging them while removing them. Ever had a front wheel bearing go out? I have. It's not pretty and not fun. Mine just happened to go out 200 miles away from home, in the rain, in Friday rush hour traffic. That's a story in iteself though...

Oh, BTW, put the bearings in the freezer for an hour prior to installing them. They will go in much easier that way.

Thats the plan - new bearings I can get them at the bearing shop for less than 20 bucks.

For those interested, here is a link to the Motion Pro bearing remover.

I am debating about whether or not to get it. $60 for someone to do it for me, or $60 for me to do it and have the tools. I am currently leaning towards getting the tools.

Hey guys...

Quicky question about "bearings in the freezer" before poping the new bearings in.... I assume you pack the bearings with grease, then freeze? Any issues with condensation I shoudl worry about? Just curious to the proceedure as I have to replace the rear bearing on the 6 spoke CBR rim I got to match the RC front going on.

I ended up buying the tools. I was concerned after I read some posts in other forums about people who ended up popping the inner race out and had to cut the outer race to get the rest of the bearing out of the hub.

Re: question about the freezer - The bearings are sealed and are already prepacked with grease.

I used a flat screwdriver and a hammer on mine too. No problems. I think unless the bearing has already self destructed then there should be no problem banging it out from the opposite side. Once the first side is out the second side is easy since the spacer isn't in the way anymore.

Well, I got the tools and found that they wont work with the RC51 front wheel that I have, there is no adapter in the kit for those bearings. The rear bearings have an adapter that fits, but didnt do so well at removing the bearings. I couldnt get the bearings to budge. I even resorted to a punch and a bigger hammer to try and get them out, no go.

Anyone have any thoughts that might help in getting the bearings out?

Seaton....

You'll need a 22mm adapter for the RC front..... I think most kits come with 20 and 25.... sorry if this info was a little too late.
