Talking New member from Tennessee with my first question....

Wow, an entire forum devoted to us Honda twin sport bike fans. How cool is that? I've been looking for something like this!

Below is my flawless 1999 pearl yellow thunderchicken along with some bikes from my other church group members. It has 5750 miles on it, and is bone stock other than the twin Two-Brothers exhaust cans, and the color-matched spokes and inner wheels which I powdercoated myself (watcha think?)

Anyway, here is my question. I don't ride the twisties very hard...I prefer straight-line acceleration and the occassional wheelie, but thats about it. My tires are original to the bike, and I need new ones.

I really like the look of a wider rear tire, so I was looking into the 190/50ZR17 to replace my stock 180/55ZR17, which I understand can be done, but here is my delimma.

Another church member has a new Pirelli Diablo 200/50ZR17 which he wants to GIVE to me if it will fit. That should be a very sharp looking tire, but what I need to know is this -

Will it fit my stock rear rim?
What is the width of a stock rear SuperHawk rim?
Will my chain clear a 200 tire?
Will changing from a 55 to a 50 affect my speedo?

Sorry if these are dumb question, guys, but I'd hate to turn down this tire if I dont have to.

Todd

On a stock rim with good chain clearance? I just want to be sure its safe before I get the tire.

Wow that's amazing a 190 is a pretty tight fit not to mention it must pinch the hell out of it. It must handle like a truck too but what ever floats your boat though.

Doesn't it hit the chain when it gets hot and expands?

I dont know about the handling issue. I see guys all the time with stretched bikes and 250 and 300 rear tires. I'm sure they handle like garbage. But, the tire getting "pinched" is my main concern. And again, I wouldnt even be considering this if the guy werent offering to give me the thing.

The stock size is a 180/55/17, you'll be amazed at the steering and throttle response if you went with the stock size. Unless you only ride in a straight line then you won't notice a thing on steering.

Lol, he just told you 3 times that 180 is that best for steering response and you still picked 190.

If it won't cause bad blood between you two, take the 200 and sell it on ebay or where ever and buy a 180.

You need a 6.0 inch rim to properly fit a 190 or 200 tire. Or you can look like a poseur/squid to those in the know.

I did turn down the free 200 tire. I suggested he sell it. I found a great price on a Pirelli Diablo Corsa 190/55ZR17(under $150). I'll get the look of the slightly wider tire, and not affect my speedo by staying with the 55. The 200 he was going to give me was a 200/50.

Sorry if I stirred up a stink about this. As far as being called a poser, squid, or even Skippy McGillicutty by using a 190 over a 180....well, I have no use for folks that refer to other cyclists that way (not saying that you did, superbling, but I know folks that do). I don't let "those people" ride with me anyway. You know the type...they spend mega bucks on the latest, fastest race replicas, and have never touched a track, yet want to call others "squid." It simply doesnt matter as long as it is safe and enjoyable.

I live in Smyrna, Tn...about 15 miles SE of Nashville. Right dead in the center of the state. The Sonrunners (my church group) does make it down that way once or twice a year. Hey, I'll ride with anybody, as long as they dont look down on me because I dont track my bike. After all, anybody who doesn't make money racing their sportbike is a squid anyway....right? I ride mostly with Harleys and Harley knock-offs, so I'll certainly ride with anyone. LOL I may post here before the next time we are down that way and we could all meet up.

Don't get me wrong man, I could careless what people do to thier bikes, I ride my own bike if you know what I mean. I was just trying to help a brother out, you'll be much happier with the 190/55 than the others although it will still effect the speedo somewhat enjoy the new rubber.

Oh and as far as making money riding on a track, there's an old saying in racing......want to make a million dollars racing........start off with three!!

Just to put my money where my mouth is: my latest purchase/ride is a 96 vfr750f that came with a stock 5 inch wheel that runs a 170 tire. To keep using "standard" 180's that I have a couple of saved back, I bought and modify a 5.5 in rim to fit the bike.
I mount my own tires so I know what a bitch it is to lever on a larger size. That alone tells me that it's not a great idea.

A mod that cost more than the stock replacement yet performs less is my definition of a poseur mod. What's yours? Don't take this as a personal attack, I'm just trying to understand why you think a 190 or 200 is so great.

I agree! LOL

Well, I bought the tire I was looking at. A Pirelli Diablo SuperCorsa 190/55ZR17. I was able to stay with the 55 size, so my speedo will not be affected. A REALLY nice looking tire. I picked up a Diablo Corsa 120/70zr17 for the front at a great price as well.

Actually the speedo will be more affected with the 190/55 than with the 190/50. But the advantage is that you have a better profile than the 190/50. Many folks like them and manufacturers are putting them as stock rubber on bikes now.

Some manufactures are even making them with the 5.5" wheel in mind for them.

But my stock tire is a 180/55zr17. Why would a 190/55 affect my speedo. The only difference between the two tires is width.

It's more than just width,(which will effect speedo's alone), aspect ratio is based on a percentage. If a tire is a 180/55 then the height of the tire is 55% of the width of the tire, if the tire is a 190/55 then the height is 55% of the 190mm width.

Awwww man! I didnt think of it that way! I already bought the tires. But, when I run the numbers, its really a toss up isnt it? My original rear tire is 180/55 size. 55% of 180 is 99mm. The rear tire I just bought is a 190/55. 55% of 190 is 104.5mm. Had I gone with a 190/50, 50% of 190 is 95mm.

So,

180X55% is 99mm
190X55% is 104.5 mm
190X50% is 95mm

Yes, it looks like the 190/50 would have been a slightly better choice size-wise, but since I opted for the 190/55, which has a larger diameter than stock, thus will rotate very slightly slower, maybe it will actually make my speedo more accurate than stock? Hey, this stuff could get confusing really quickly! LOL
