New member, first VTR1000F. Just to say hi.

Just got a 00' Superhawk 996 with 2750 original miles 100% bone stock. looks like its been sitting indoors for its entire life. The previous owner said he had bought it at 1500mi. He drained and flushed the tank cleaned the carbs and replaced the fuel filters. S'hawk runs fine however gas light wont come up but after searching i'm pretty sure its the fuel sender unit. I got stuck at 95mi on a full tank. I was so disappointed ... but i had a big grin as well. Coming from a sv650 its taking some time getting use to the comfort of the bike however handling and power is on point compared to my tired sv650 on stock 57k miles suspension. I've done some searching and heard to check for some bolts come loose by the shock?. Any tips on what else are problematic? I am aware of the CCT & R/R problems too.

I have already flushed and bled clutch, f&r brakes. I need to clean the remaining surface rust from the inside tank i got
Evapo-Rust ER012 Evapo-Rust ER012
for the job but an uncle said to use kerosene with nuts and bolts and shake like no tomorrow. I have also heard to use BBs from other folks but worried a few might get stuck in the cracks.
Chain, sprockets, brakes, tires all look good. Next on the list is most likely comfort sargent or corbin seat even helibars, parts seem hard to find though.
possible high mount exhaust and a rejet but not sure how much i want to be invested in to the bike.

I also learned NOT to fill up gas from the left side. I bent the locking mechanism and had to push it back to shape.

Most people only get about 100-130 miles out of the tank before a fill up.

Welcome aboard. Awesome find. I just pulled a yellow '99 out of a storage unit with 6k miles on it. Very clean but needs everything you'd imagine a bike that sat for 8 or 10 years needs. You said the tires "looked fine." That bike has obviously been sitting a long time. What's the date on the them? Unless they were recently replaced I'd definitely invest a few hundred bucks in fresh rubber and lose what may be a pair of hockey pucks

Thanks for checking about the tires they are one of the most important things. The PO had put on pirelli angels on them he said the old ones were cracked and hard. original chain and sprocket i believe, a little surface rust spots but cleaned up ok and waxed.. Still trying to get used to the footing positions at stops, i have a short inseam. Also was wondering about they hydraulic clutch, is it ok to keep it held at stops? I'm use to cable clutches. I have been coming to stops with right foot braking then pop into neutral but i can only get one foot comfortably on the floor so I'm hopping from foot to foot and it is awkward my foot wants to be where the peg is so i have to go around the foot peg or above it. The feeling is just awkward... behind it is too hot yes ouch...

Cream, what boots are you wearing? Wear something with a thick sole and they'll help with reach issues. I have the same thing on a KLR enduro wearing certain shoes. But when I wear my 'adventure' boots it's not an issue. Also, I"m pretty sure they make a 'lowering device' for the VTR, and you can drop the forks in the trees to even things out. But then you lose cornering clearance. Boots if feasible would be the non-performance affecting fix.
