New here

I just got home on my '03 SuperHawk, blue, k&n, Micron exhaust I think, Zero gravity screen, 37,000 miles. I'll be around here learning about this thing.
I also have an '09 XR650L I have been riding like a sportbike, so I got a sportbike. Thanks for reading.

welcome aboard glock. I ride an 02 XR like a sportbike too. Are you planning on getting rid of it or???

try to find out if your SH has manual ccts, if it has a finned reg/rectifier, and when the valves were adjusted. These are weak points that should be addressed by any new owner.

do lots of reading because there is a wealth of info available on this forum and many knowledgeable members who will help you and sometimes try to bite your head off at the same time.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I'll do my homework before asking q's. I will be checking it over more closely. Seems like alot of miles but it runs like a Honda.
Now I can take the street tires off the XR and go back to *****. Who knows if I'll ever want to ride it again tho.
Wolverine, great pic man!

There are people roaming around on here with 80k miles, so it's still got plenty of life left! Plus one on the R/R and cct's- those'll get ya, and like nath said, with that many miles it may be time to check valves (although this is a lower priority).

Love that blue flame exhaust...

And jealous of the XR. I don't have the means to own a dual sport yet, but that bike's damn near the top of the list. Wouldn't mind a KTM 640 either...

no don't ever get rid of the XR. i sold a 93, then wrecked the hawk and had to buy another one to keep me riding til I got the hawk on the road again. Got to have a spare and that's a good one to have. Hell rarely ride the hawk on winter roads because it's no fun on dirty roads, but the xr is, esp with shinko 705s.

maybe it's time to start using that high mileage oil, or you can just quit changin it and make you own high mileage oil.

seriously, have you done a compression test and are they both set up equally?

Hey GlockPointer, tried to enlarge the pic of your bike but couldn't. Was trying to see which BlueFlame pipes you had. Don't see many other VTR's with these mufflers. I've had mine for over 8 yrs now & still love um.

Here is the only other gd pic that would load. The busted off tab on my right pipe, leaving a gaping hole that surely is affecting the happy of my motor.
Who makes the blue flame cans? The one in an above post looks just like mine. Except mine aren't level, and one has a hole in.

So no fuel shutoff at the tank like the XR?

Blue flame is the brand, I believe. If you get that welded, I bet your right foot will smell a little less like petrol and the bike'll run better. I have no idea how the color is done, but something tells me that it's a coating of some sort and not a heat treatment.

The VTR uses a vacuum operated petcock, located under the rear of the tank.

Be sure you make note of the location of the petcock vacuum line when you r&r the tank. That will help to avoid "PVLIR".

Wait, I meant those pipes above only vagely look like mine. I have no tag or sticker on them. Nor do they look that trick.

Not looking forward to messing with the cct's but I guess I have too. I am tired of wrenching on crap, I want to ride.

So all my pics are 2+mb, what can I do about that? Hence they won't load.

I said "load"

Lots of free software to resize pics. I use IrfanView. Takes about 5 seconds.

Holy sheep dip. I got the hole in the exhaust welded up at Darkside on Braker lane. Looks like a robot did it. Never have I seen, in person, welds that clean.
I start the bike and it will now barely run. I warmed it up, tried to blip the throttle every so often and it ran like ***, backfiring, hesitating...

I mused about this for a couple of beer, and then we started up again and left. It was much better for some reason. We went to wendys and when we left it was MUCH better. Went to a friends house and when we left it was even BETTER!

Now it is an animal, a slight blip into second wants to lift the front.

Here is the new pisser, I get home after passing some cops and what not, I have no license plate or inspection sticker, and my gay turn sigs are bouncing off the back tire. I went by cops like this.

Good news is it runs more like it should. Now I can't ride until I sort that other crap out.

Ride the bike in the meantime... the CCT's are important, but no reason to not let you ride. Turn signals, meh, who needs 'em?!

I use photobucket for my photos. You upload them, then it re-sizes them for you and you can paste big ole' pictures right in the thread:

Yeah the license and inspection were on when I left toward home! When I had to cruise by the cop who was doing 15 under the limit in my direction mind you, I thought I had a license back there! Turn sigs bouncing off the rear tire had to look funny because they must be set up as marker lights since they are lit all the time and blink when you want. Bouncing off the tire. yes, that's the proper face.
