New Hawk owner!

Hey guys! I just picked up a 98 Hawk this past Saturday. Needs cam chain tensioners (going to get the APE manual ones), has a fuel leak (probably the petcock) and other than that it's in pretty good shape.

I'm no stranger to bikes, I had a 2003 TLR that was HEAVILY modded out. I haven't had it for a few years now and when my friend's brother offered me this VTR for $1k I couldn't say no.

I look forward to learning a lot about this bike!

I've attached pics of my old TLR and my new VTR

Welcome.

You shouldn't steal from your friend's brother.

LOL. He called me on the tensioners last year when it happened. MY buddy was telling me that he wanted to sell it and jokingly I said "I'd give him a grand for it." Well his brother kept asking me if I wanted to buy it and I finally asked how much. He said "Well my brother told me you'd give me a grand for it so...uh...how about a grand?" SOLD!

I was really hoping to pick up another TLR but I can't find one in decent shape for under $3500. So for a grand I couldn't resist. At least it's got the right number of cylinders

Looks nice! I'm sure it'll be amazing when you're done, like that red TLR. Did you do all the work on that one yourself?

You can save $50 by converting the stock tensioners to manual. Search for threads i have on it.

Well I got it torn down tonight. Front tensioner is toast but it looks like the valves are OK. Time to order up the Ape tensioners. I also found the fuel leak - it's coming from the sending unit. I'll get that o-ring replaced and not worry about that.

before you order that O ring I would take apart the petcock and check the condition of the diaphram... its a semi common problem with these bikes and you could just order a rebuild kit if needed.

The petcock is fine and dry (but I already have a rebuild kit coming for it) buy the sender was soaked.

Anyone know if these tensioners are any good? At under $70 for a pair that'd be the way to go

Here is an idea of what ACCTs look like when converted to MCCTs.

Welcome SXR.
Glad the widow maker didn't make someone single! The Hawks motor won't live up to the zuki (from what I've read) but hopefully its ergos and character will make up the difference and then some.

Thanks for the welcome! Yea the TLR was a beast. I had a full TiForce exhaust, K&N filter and custom mapped PC3 and it was putting down 132HP and 82 TQ at the wheel with over 30k on the clock. She was good to me

Welcome aboard! WOW that TLR looks amazing! The Ohlins forks! The BST wheels! The whole bike! Oh yeah nice deal on the superhawk too

Curious did you sell it as shown or take any of the parts off? I just bought a pair of stock wheels for my Hayabusa (bought it also with a pair of BSTs on it) because I may sell it in the near future and feel it would probably be easier to sell the BSTs separately and drop the price of the bike, thereby making it alot easier to sell as well.
