My first Hawk!

Hello All..... I recently sold my CBR600 of 14 years & upgraded to a '99 Superhawk with only 11K miles. (I've been looking for the right one, at the right price for a couple years now.)

This is my first week with it, and I have been making my maintenance "to do" list.

I'm not sure yet if it's been jetted, but it does have a nice pair of Jardine high mount slip ons. I figured when I pull the tank to change the plugs and air filter, I would go ahead and get to the carbs to check the jets & see if they are original, along with checking the needle washers.

I really don't have a gauge as to how a jetted vs non jetted would compare. It does "pop" a little in deceleration from 3rd to 2nd etc. I figured that could also just be the plugs? (it starts really easy, runs fine, and does not hesitate at all when you get on the throttle.)

Question(s):
1. Other than changing all the fluids, filters, & plugs, is there anything else I should address?
2. Should the popping be a concern, or is this a result from a race style set-up through the cans & possible jetting?

Input is much appreciated, and I look forward to this forum in the future!

Check if the PAIR system has been removed or not. Thats probably the source of the popping.

Other than that, swap out the cam chain tensioners for manuals, go through the knowledge base to read up on the CCT issues.

Popping on deceleration is fairly common from the factory, and more often than not is a result of a lean condition (presumably to pass emissions) and still having the PAIR system. Disabling PAIR and putting in a set of #48 pilots will likely make it go away. If it's not stock, it will have a clip on the needle in the slide. Also, if it's been tinkered with you may find a K&N filter (which you should approach with caution). If yours is running without hesitation, it's probably got a stock filter

There's a good read on "carb setup" by 8541Hawk that's worth looking into before you get into the carbs.

And a big +1 on those CCT's. That one could bite you big time if you don't do a little preventative maintenance.

Welcome!

the first things usually to take care of is the cct's,than the R/R.those are the 2 that we all worry about first and the most.
here is some links that will come in handy.

Take a gander in the knowledge base section for your to do list. A lot of useful sticky's there. The R/R replacement is an easy fix and can relieve some possible issues down the road with getting stranded.

Superdutyd is a member here who makes Manual CCT's and they are cheaper $ then most manufactures and are higher in quality . I highly recommend him as do many on the forum he makes a great product. He also makes PAIR blocking plates to help assist with your backfire issues.

Welcome to the club! and enjoy the twin!

Dan, everyone else has your issues covered, I'm going to welcome you to the forum! 14 years is a long time to spend w/ one steed. Were you sorry to see it go, do you still have it? You have to be absolutely loving the twin torque.

Oh, the popping is the PAIR system doing it's job. It injects air in to the exhaust to burn any raw fuel that might be in there, resulting in cleaner emissions. I rather like that pop and burble. I bought the Superdutyd plates but haven't put them on yet for that very reason.

I've been wanting to cut my CBR loose for a couple years. The Superhawks & and especially the V-Twin rumble, has intrigued me for years. The situation finally presented itself, and Boom, there it is. 200 miles in the first 3 days, and an upcoming weekend of tinkering. I'm stoked!
