Hey y'alls, callin from Phoenix, AZ! I have been riding riding a little Honda Shadow for almost a year and was ready for an upgrade/older sibling to accompany my first bike. Extensive research pointed to the Superhawk (couldn't decide if I wanted a sport, tourer faired, naked, etc. and somehow this bike always fit regardless of my mood). And after trying so many bikes I had to go with the V-twin and so, here I am, proud owner of a '98 maroon Firestorm with 26K miles on it- pics will come as soon as I access a camera! Initial night of riding suggests that I may have just made one of the better decisions of the 21st century.

I know there are plenty of other forums asking for general advice, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I ride to work daily when I can (it's a bit warm in Phoenix, but my car doesn't have AC so makes little diff to me). I have familiarized myself with the bike as much as a very amateur mechanic could online. I am just now getting a place with a garage so have little experience in working on bikes, but would love to start getting my hands greasy.

All that aside, I have one concern: The bike seems to click every once in awhile when I ride it. Sounds like I just got hit with a piece of road debris, but noticeable glitch in performance when it happens. It may just be that I'm too low in the RPM's cause I'm still kinda riding it like my cruiser... any thoughts?

8541Hawk will become famous soon enough
Keep the bike above 3k and see how it works......
at low RPM you can hear the carb slides opening and closing.

>> GREAT! This at least gives me something to consider looking at (my current motorcycle experience has is limited to changing the oil and adjusting the chain). I plan on taking it to a mechanic soon for an initial inspection, then it'll be all mine to screw up however I see fit...

Good Idea. If your bike stops working properly always come here first. 8541Hawk and Tweety most likely know more about these bikes than any mechanic you will ever meet.

I'll plan on coming here then- I'm fairly mechanically able and would like to get to know my bike rather than take it in, but b/c I am new to them want to have a pro look it over for major defects and such. Great help, guys...

You definitely have the right Idea. Jumping from a Shadow to the hawk is an awesome choice. You will love it. I would recomend looking up Bafflectomy.

Doesn't seem to click above 3,000 RPM. Note to self, do no ride like a cruiser... Also not to self, wheelies are now possible. whopee!

Welcome to the club! Lots of good info around here. Don't fall into Tweety's cage by not using the "Search" feature. He gets pissed if someone else is chewing on his cuttlebone.

Welcome and congrats. Every time I hear a new intro it takes me back to the first time I kicked a leg over my VTR. I knew it was mine before I even rode it.

Be safe with all that new found stump pullin' torque.

Welcome to the forum. This is a great place for help on your hawk. FYI... Tweety's not so bad.

Service Manual

Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement How To

Regulator Rectifier Upgrade

After joining I found those three links very helpful. They're posted as stickies in the knowledge base but it still took me a while to figure out where they were.
