Into the Sierras. Touring the VTR... again!

Tomorrow, I am loading up my tankbag and hitting the road on the VTR.

Sierra Tour to Reno via Hwy 4 - Google Maps

My cousin is riding back home to Toronto Canada. He rode out to San Francisco on a 1981 (?) BMW R80GS. Now he is heading back. I will be riding with him into Nevada. Spend the night in Reno and head home.

Trying to get in a few overnighters on the VTR. If plans are good, I will be riding to Toronto and beyond next summer. (maybe pick up a few VTR riders to join part of the way?)

Will take vids for your enjoyment.

Made it back into the City this afternoon. This was a trip to remember.

Long story short... The VTR started to misfire horribly as we climbed Hwy 4 into the Sierras. I was unable to go faster then 50mph. Anyway, we found out that the rear spark plug wire was not making proper contact inside of the boot. Stripped the wire and then black taped it so it wouldn't happen again.

We had rain and heavy hail up in the mountains. My tires were definitely not in the condition necessary for the nasty weather. Lots of sliding and treacherous moments.

I ended up puncturing my rear tire when we ran into a rock slide. Fortunately I was able to patch it. Made it back in good order. New tires tomorrow. Looking at the Dunlop D616.

Definitely a possibility!

I don't know what the route will be yet but I will have to travel in your part of the country. I am still considering doing the Route 66 "backwards". But that would leave out too much of the country. Would like to ride the south. Maybe to Florida then up the Atlantic coastline.

As it gets closer I will post a new thread for possible "crash pads" and recommend sites.

Miguel,
Looks cold up on Hwy 4. Sorry I never got to SF on my trip out there. We skipped the coast and stayed on the east side of Calif. Went over Tioga Pass into Lake Tahoe. Sounds like the trip to Toronto will be nice. If you do go south and come up thru NC get me a yell. I can show you some roads in the mountains of NC & VA. Heck I might even go to Canada with you, My inlaws live just south of Toronto.

Despite the issues your bike experienced, it looks like a super route. Did you ever find yourself running dangerously low on gas between available gas stations? That's something I think about.

Fuel issues are always something to worry about but for some reason I get amazing fuel MPG.

On this trip I received up to 46MPG when on the highway. When I went to Death Valley a few months ago I also got 46MPG. But back in the City I get in the mid 30's.

Because I need to refuel at around 150 miles I feel pretty good about taking her on a long trip. I will carry an extra quart to be safe.
