want to make a touring vtr...

I'm trying to make a touring bike out of my vtr by making it more comfortable and get better mileage so far I have a sargent seat, hella bars and have changed the gearing with a 1+ front and 2- rear sprockets.
I'm planning on getting a vfr tank and getting koso gauges to work with the vfr fuel sender if that's possible?
Is there any smaller rear sprocket that will work and what else could I do to improve mileage and comfort?

Changing the gearing like that isn't going to improve your fuel mileage. The bike is geared already for optimum mileage. gearing it taller will just force you to use 5th on the highway because your under the rpm where the engine starts building power (stock gearing revs 4k rpm @70mph anything under 3 in 6th gear and the bike bogs a bit when you crank to WOT, of course I have a K&N filter I need to get rid of as well and that could be part of my issue). Going up 1 on the front or down 2 on the rear would be okay, both is going to be overkill though. And where did you find a 17t front sprocket for the bike? I've looked and not been able to find anything

IMHO The Corbin is much nicer than the Sargent and you would do better with a superbike bar conversion then the heli's (I have the heli's and while they are better than stock the superbike bar gives you another inch or so which for me ends up perfect)

Somebody on here had a rare 6.1 Gallon Alum tank for sale that is ****, but they are expensive. I believe he was asking $1500 for it, but from some searching that's pretty much what they fetch. They were a limited run.

Other than that, some saddle bags, tail bag, and tank bag and you're set I like the Sedici's that I have

SEDICI - Toscana Saddlebags - Saddlebags - Luggage - Accessories - CycleGear - Cycle Gear

Just be sure to put some leather or a cloth behind them or they will rub the finish off the tail of the bike

I got my sprockets from sprocketcenter.com
Superlite 530 drilled and lightened steel 17t front sprocket $36
Jt 530 steel 39t rear $40
It still uses a 102 link chain but its a little too long and uses up most of the axle adjustment but 100 links is too short if only I could have 101 links

Btw with that gearing the speedometer was about spot on but the odometer changed so I'm not sure what the mileage difference is but it did improve

Look at my signature,,,, and what ever else I've done to my bike.

Sport tourer, play bike, weekend ride bike, 1836 mile Iron butt bike, 2, 3, 4 day trip bike.

But basically

Sergeant Seat
Apex 4" bars
Daugherty Motorsports - Motorcycle Suspension Performance and Modification suspension
Vista Cruise throttle lock
Double Bubble wind screen
Dual USB weather proof charge port
Good headlight
Are the key comfort components

Eric, can you provide the part/model number for the Vista Cruise lock that works on the Shawk?

Jay, don't know if they're still available, but here are some yellow Corbin beetle bags for sale by a forum member: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...-yellow-30603/

Here's the gas tank previuosly mentioned. It was still available in December: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...is-tank-30073/

Thanks Mr. Marquez. I've been planning to pick one up. Talking with a forum member turned me off of the Throttlemeister so I'll stick with the tried and true Vista Cruise.

He's right about the gearing... I have stock front and -2 on the back (39t) and it's geared pretty tall. I can cruise at 70 or 80 in 4th gear very comfortable, and it feels funny to shift up into 6th. But in 4th, I'm only getting 25mpg.

I've had 3 Corbin seats and 1 Sargent, and I hated the Corbins, and love the Sargent. YMMV.

In addition to Mr. Marquez suggestions,
If you desire more leg room, these are nice.

A 12VDC outlet is nice also. I use this for my Ram mount GPS

And without a doubt one of the best upgrades I have done is install the mirror extensions that were made by one of our members. IMHO a must.

The rear cowling is also pretty fragile. If fitting saddlebags, a suggestion is to purchase or fab up some protection from additional side pressure.
Such as these...

Ideally, it would look and work like this.

Vista cruise, touring screen, corbin seat, givi wingrack (all cases fit all 3 spots). 52 liter maxia topcase. These are e21 21 liter sidecases but I have e45, 45 liter side cases that each hold 2 full face helmets.

Ram gps mount. You will want sound in the helmet so bluetooth or chatterbox.

Eastern beaver high output headlight setup with 100 watt bulb.

The tank is made specifically for the SuperHawk as I understand it. More specifically, it is made for rich guys with SuperHawks.

Thanks for the inspiration- I've been trying to figure out where to install a 12v outlet, and that looks good!

If you are looking for a way to charge USB devices (all my charging / power needs are USB, I see no need to wire up a 12v cig lighter or powerlet socket, only to use a USB power adapter in that socket.

Those needing a 12v socket... well, disregard.)

Here is another option

USB=Better Idea. After thinking about it I only mounted the 12V power outlet on my bike, because that was what I was using in my truck. It's worked fine, but USB is cleaner. I'm changing that sucka out. Thanks

The 12 volt outlet is way more useable. Especially since you can cheaply get a plug that converts it to usb power anyway.

2 bucks Mini 12V Bullet Dual USB Port Car Charger Adaptor for iPhone iPod Touch 4G 3GS | eBay

12 volt works for electric gear, gps, phones, etc. Not to mention I plug the battery charger right into it at night. Not doable with a usb only.

I guess it's a to-each-his-own type of deal. Really depends on what your individual needs are, but it seems like a good middle ground would be to just install both. Don't forget to put rears in for passenger use. Now, what would be really cool would be incorporating them into the cup holder brackets. That would be trick. The veritable cherry on top for VTROTM consideration.

True for you, but not every one is you..

It's only "Way more usable" if you have ANY need for a 12 v plug supply..... I don't, so it's not more usable for me..or anyone I have ridden with lately... that's why we install a USB port... it's what runs our phone, GPS, Music, charges our SCALA Rider.

I suppose if I was looking to light up a cigarette or Cigar at a ride stop point, I would install a cigarette lighter plug

I found the cheap adapters stuffed into a 12v socket, only lasted a year or so, and the vibrations or something would kill um. I did try this method for 5 or 6 years,, but got tired of stopping at truck stops to buy a replacement adapter or new 12v plugs and wiring them in the parking lot

To each his own,, for sure if you have a use for 12v power supply.. go with a 12v socket ...

Me, if I needed 12v, Id add 2 sockets, one USB and one 12v.

I'd stay away from soft luggage, they don't hold much and aren't waterproof

For moi

Givi Top Case, and get a drybag & bungie it to the passenger seat + a tank bag. U could tour a long trip with those 3 things.

I've had my Givi case since new (2002) and even low sided with it - no problem.

Those plus I have Hot Grips and a taller wind screen by ZG & of course a 12v charger for the celly.

While they aren't in themselves waterproof my Sedici's came with waterproof covers to put on them when going down the road. I agree though, I would prefer a nice set of hard bags. I'm sure an ST1100 is in my future I say 1100 because I just don't like the styling of the new 1300's so I'd rather rebuild an older bike to make it new again

I prefer the NEP throttle lock, Vario adjustable.foot peg adapter with 1" extension and Sport pegs, 2010+ Shad SH46 top case (I also have a 25 L top case) on a modifed Ventura Sport rack with their Superhawk L-brackets (their Tour rack pops on theses brackets so I can alternatively use the Ventura large & medium bags), Helibars/Tomaselli/DanMoto 3D clip-ons, ZG DB, twin 50 W driving lights, 75/55w H4 bulb, Mosfet VRR, 10 & 12 games wiring harness with all circuits relayed & fused an a lot more.
