Weak wiring to the headligth eating power turning it to heat, check...
Weak R/R not supplying correct voltage, check...
Battery on it's last leg, check...

400ex2008, I just saw your post, i'm having a similar problem with my '98 Superhawk, and just posted something in Tech a few days ago. My headlight goes dim and bright, then usually stays dim. My voltages check out ok, battery is fine, so I'm going to do an R6 R/R swap ASAP and see if it changes.

Did you ever figure anything out?

Booted out of the nest huh.

Probably the best wake up call you'll ever get. Now you'll need to become a real "superhawk" and prove you can survive on your own.

welcome to the forum!

If charging voltage (checked at the battery terminals) doesn't drop with the dimming of the headlight, your R/R is probably okay.

Charging voltage should be approximately 13.5V to 15.5V with the engine running. The manual says to check it at 5000 rpm, but I wouldn't run the engine at 5000 rpm with no load. You could temporarily rev it up that high, but don't hold it there. In my opinion, you should get correct charging voltage at 2500 rpm.

Check the headlight connector and all ground connections for corrosion and looseness.

Please tell me you got one of the mosfet R/R and not a diode type. That warranty is not going to help if you catch on fire lol.
