Hawk idles @ 500rpm and spikes to 1000 - 1200k

Need Help! not sure what has happened to my hawk. Woke up this morning got ready for work, hopped on the bike and about a mile down the road pulling up to a stop sign I notice something not normal... the title of this thread describes the issue i'm having also have video of the bike idling... http://goo.gl/Kbr53
The only thing I could find on here about what may be going on with my bike is a thread about the ICM (ignition control module) going bad. Would like some insight from the wisehawks

Did you get gas recently or buy it at someplace differt than you normally do? I'm asking because it sounds like a dirty or clogged pilot jet to me.

Either pull the carbs and clean them or you might get lucky if you run some Techron (or SeaFoam) through the fuel system.

I see you're from Minneapolis (I'm from St. Paul) ... I wonder if the extreme heat and especially humidity could have led to water in the fuel system? How full was your tank? (No scientific basis for this, just a thought.)

This is also a possible cause. Water in the tank would also cause the issue you are having.

The bike was sitting in the garage for a few days w/74 miles on the tank. I thought maybe it could be condensation so I added some seafoam. Also had the carbs cleaned a couple
months ago. Maybe i'll try draining the tank and put new gas in...

Well with 74 miles on the tank, you had plenty of air space for condensation to form and sitting for a couple of days also would compound the problem.

You can either dump what is in there or just top it off with fresh fuel and run it a bit and the issues should go away.

Yeah that's what I'm thinkin'... The bike was sittin' in the garage when we had the heat wave showed up and the dew point was higher outside than it was inside the gas tank... that ='s condensation. I'll let you guys know what happens when I dump the tank and put fresh fuel in.

I've also heard of carb icing but hardly think it's the right conditions for that issue plus the coolant lines run through the carb body keepin' them a bit warm when the thermostat is open?

Well it's not icing and FYI the coolant only flows through the carbs when the thermostat is closed. Once the thermostat opens the carbs are bypassed

Well... I'm stumped gas is clean, carbs are clean all hoses and lines connected properly. Now it doesn't want to start with out pulling the choke and won't stay running unless I hold the throttle. It's acting very similar to when I had the tear in the petcock diaphragm it's running like it's on one cylinder like it's being restricted somehow. Not sure what else to check.

I had the same problem suddenly a few weeks ago. There is a link in my Sig for magnum opus. That is how I fixed it.

Have you taken the tank off during any of this? If you have did you put the vacuum line back to the right place?

Thanks geekonamotorcycle I'll check that out.

I have had the tank off and have checked all the hose connection to make sure there all in the right place.

Was your gas tank resprayed in the past? Could crap have worked its way through into fuelling... Are there fuel filters in place?

Is it the same cylinder running rough or is the cough/stumble alternating between the two?

Is the sparkplug cap on tight? coil & leads okay?

Question... what are the two black boxes located under the seat? I'm pretty sure one is the ICM (ignition control module) not sure what the other one is it's tucked way up in the back right next to the tail light and it's the larger of the two boxes.
When the bike is running (not very well right now) the smaller of the two boxes (ICM) is clicking is this normal.

It's been a while since I posted this thread... just thought I'd let you guys know what the issue was. The plug wire (rear cylinder) on the coil end was really really corroded. so I snipped a quarter inch off the end and plugged it back in. Runs like she just came out of the crate!

i was about to say after listening to the video it sounded like a cylinder was coming on and off. Like it would fire then stop firing. Glad you got it figured out.
