ham fisted? A rant

I have been reading the posts about the zero gravity screens. Seems they are well liked and respected. Has no one had trouble getting the stock well nuts through the holes on the ZG screen? My VTR is 2002, if it makes any difference, and the well nuts really don't fit well in I broke the corner off the friggin thing trying to get the well nut in. NOT ham fisted. I wet the thing first and got no joy. Then I used a little light weight lube to make it slippery. Gently applying pressure, evenly and slowly increasing. Then....SNAP! #$%*! Now what? I have experience welding plastics but I'm totally pissed! Their web site suggests using their well nuts but no where in the instructions does it mention this. In fact, it encourages the use of the stock part if possible! I'm now stuck with an expensive piece of ***** I can't use. My instincts told me to enlarge the holes slightly, but did I listen? Has anyone else managed to mangle the pricy piece of.....?

They're kind of pieces of **** really, at least where fitment is concerned...I have two of them on other bikes, and I'm unimpressed by both...but they look ok and work well.

The wellnuts are easiest to install by using a bolt threaded into the nut to push or pull it through. This way, when you are manipulating it, it is stretching out rather than getting compressed. Makes a big difference from what I have found.

Re-using once compressed well nuts aren't a great idea at all... Especially not 10 year old ones that by now are pretty hard... I'd always buy new fasteners if I where doing anything like this... To late now though...

It looks like the early well nuts are straight with no flange or ribs. The well nuts I pulled out of my wind screen are rubber, (soft and pliable), with a flange on one end, a sort of rib, then a threaded insert. I'll post a photo later. They are made so the plastic screen slips into the gap between the rib and the flange. They must be pulled through from the threaded side and that is what popped the screen. I got the two in one side but as I started the 3rd in the outside corner the friggin thing just broke! I was pulling them through with a screw and lots of lube. Worked twice before, SNAP!*****!! Well I did write the mfg with a description of the event, not flaming. Maybe they will help out maybe they will refuse, but it's worth a try. I still have the OEM screen. BTW, off topic, I have a set of Two Brothers exhaust on the way. Lets hope I don't bugger that up!

It's sad to see you're having problems Twist. Two ZG wind screens so far, perfect fit, and no problems what so ever with the rubbery bolts your talking about.
If the MFG does not give you satisfiction, perhaps look into a ZG.

the screen is a zg. It fits the bike just fine, it's the well nuts that cause the issue! As I started my intuition told me to enlarge the holes slightly but I didn't listen to myself. Doh! (banging head on desk)

In that case, perhaps the nuts are not the originals. If your not the first owner, it is possible they have been changed.

And no plastic part in the world is worth bang'in your head on the desk for

No, actually the well nuts you re-used where at one point without a rib... But some odd ten years being compressed, sitting in place, has made the neck that is compressed to form that rib stay in place, and not elongate when you release the bolt... I know, since I have a set of unused OEM Honda wellnuts that I got with a screen I bought...

So had you used fresh wellnuts, with the neck not deformed, you wouldn't have broken anything... Lesson learned hopefully, you get new wellnuts, or you get a new windscreen... Simple as that...

After my little tantrum over the ZG screen, I got an email back from Zero Gravity. I am glad I wrote the letter in a very business like tone. I got a message from them today and they have decided to step up to the plate and help me out. The instructions will change as a result. My opinion of them just shot waaayyyy up! I managed to keep my temper out of it and that proved to be very positive.

+1 Twist. Happy to see you got satisfaction. I know from dealing in customer service, being polite and calm is always the best way to go.
Less defensive that way, and more inclind to help.

Yes, they were very friendly. They weren't going to help at first but the guy re-read my email and called me. It was the point about the instructions and the website instructions not matching. So they sent me a new screen and well nuts at 1/2 cost. Don't get me wrong, I'm usually friendly, (I think), but I have a wicked fast temper.

Affirmative, they are a great company. Didn't have to respond but they did and they helped me out. They have a loyal customer in me.
