When I worked in construction as an electrician from '76 to '81, many times I had to use an 18" long, 2 1/2" diameter auger bit with a Milwaukee 1/2" heavy duty drill to drill through double top plates, making a hole for the service riser.
If you hit a nail or two, the torque of the drill would just about break your arm. I learned to brace myself against a stud, use a loose grip on the drill handle, and push on the rear handle with an open palm. But if you didn't have the handle positioned where it would hit a stud when it broke free of your grip, the handle could get you in the face when it spun around. Fun times.

There was one framer I would sometimes work behind who said I would never hit a nail with him on the job, because he always nailed the top plate over the studs. I thanked him for that.
