Gas mileage
Alright we all know that the superhawk isn't exactly the best on fuel mileage.
I love the torque of the twin and the feel, but like I said the gas mileage is killing me.
I have had the bike for 2 years and I have over 10K mies on it. With gas currently being 229 a gallon - Thats a lot of gas $.
My bike is all stock (engine wise) except for yosh rs-3 cans and a jet kit. Put on less than 6 months ago. Before ht jst kit and after it, I get maby 100 miles till she is empty.
Figuring a 5 gallon tank (spec is 4.9) that is about 20mpg.
Does anyone else see a problem with this??????????

Re: Gas mileage
I have Two Brothers exhaust on mine and it's jetted. I usually get between 35 and 40 mpg as long as i dont ride it hard all the time. When i check my mileage I just fill the tank to the same point each time and look on the pump for how many gallons I put in.

Re: Gas mileage
I get about the same, 3.2 gallons to around 120 miles. I've taken it to 135 and never seen the RLOD. That's getting on it a little too. I will turn it off at long stop lights but thats more to keep my crotch from boiling than saving gas.

Wow! Thanks for reassuring me that I don't want a jet kit. I'd like the power gains, but this is also my commuter.
I convince my wife to let me buy gear by telling her how much I save riding the hawk at 30 mpg vs my truck at 16 mpg.

Re: Gas mileage
Im new here too... and have been reading all I can on my SH....
First V-Twin I have owned and I love it!!!
I bought it with some mods.... Carbon Fiber Two Brothers cans and jetted... + 2 on the rear sprocket. ( just for background)
I ride 65 miles one way to work at $2.65 a gallon
Not including the lil putting around I do during the day I wind up around 140 miles a day on the average.
I was getting around 130 miles to a tank and fill 3.8 gallons with the +2 sprocket. I changed it from 43 back to 41 and now I get close to 145 on the tank and 3.6 to fill.
Now I know that the the speedo on these are not that accurate, but thats a pretty hefty improvement in my book
BTW... 2000 VTR with 12K on the odo

Re: Gas mileage
I am new to the super hawk as well. I have a bone stock 03 with just about 1000 Miles on it. I love the bike but it does get crappy milage. I am getting around 90 to 110 before RLOD. I had a Duc 748 in the past and it even did a tad better on gas. I have read that these bike have big carbs and a few road test mention that as the poor gas milage culprit.

Re: Gas mileage
Hell I just scotch brighted my stock header back to the cans...took like 30 mins maybe to do...100% improvement in my opinion. Took all the water spots and crap off and gave them an nice patterned simi-shiney look. This was done like 2 months ago and they still look good. Its an option if you dont have the money for the Jet coating right away.

Thanks for the tip on the scotch brite.... I forgot how good that works... sigh.... still gettin the dust out of the memory channels... lol
The coating will come... but I have to get a few cosmetics to IMPROVE my gas mileage.... hugger, undertail and lowers....

Re: Gas mileage
I usually get between 75 and 90 miles before the RLOD. Bike has 15t countershaft, race core Jardine high-mounts, 182, 185 mains 50 pilot, etc...
Mileage sucks, but I also noticed that my RLOD comes on a bit early... When I fill, I can only get 3.1 gallons in there instead of the 3.5 that I should... even so, it works out to about 30mpg... not great, but it was a bit better before the mods (which I totally think are worth it for the kind of duty the bike sees)

Re: Gas mileage
'02 w/7k miles - basically stock in terms of power/fuel related stuff except for exhaust.
I'm getting between 30 & 35mpg. Reserve blinker comes on around 100mi.
Cans are Two Brothers aluminum hi-mount
Stock aircleaner, haven't done the recommended 4 degree ignition advance (yet) but plan to soon, along with jetting & dynotune.

I usually see around 135 - 140 before the RLOD, and I have TBR low mount C4s, Factory Pro Dyno Tune and Jet kit (real dyno tune), K&N Air Filter, 1 tooth down in the front and 2 up in the rear. So I can't really complain about the mileage at all. Better than the mustang I sold to buy the SH, 6-8MPG VS 35-40MPG?

Re: Gas mileage
Hey, I hear you. While there, I filled up my "micro" rental car for $60.00 USD!!!!! If I lived there, I'd own a motorcycle and one of those tiny smart cars.
