Correct Octane Rating

What is the impact of Octane Rating with the VTR.

In Souh Africa, we were using leaded 98Octane till 2 years ago. With the banning of leaded fuel and the move to unleaded, we only have 93 Octane, however, some companies are now introducing unleaded 95 Octane.

Your thoughts?

I run 87 with no problems...93 should be just fine.

Yeah 87 I believe is all that's required and what most are running so 93 is fine.

the emission sticker under the seat calls for 91 octane. i've used 89 a few times but usually 92-93.

and what year bike do you have? My '98 only calls out 87 and infact it runs better on the lower octaine fuel

just a thought. here in the usa we use the r+m method of rating octane levels. in some owners manuals this method is not used. i believe the method for the shawk has the "m" designation. (under the seat says 91) in which case the r+m method runs 3 or 4 points lower than the "m" method. i run 87(r+m) no prblems.

Mine seems to get better MPG with 93 but not much better. We have a local station that only charges 15 cents more for 93 vs. 87 so it does not cost much extra on a fill up.

They also have 100 octane at the pump for $4.99.

Might just be in my head though.

I run 87 99% of the time.. Have run 91, and the bike seems to like it (or is it just in my head?).. I have even run 91 on octane booster.. Got a contact at a local airport. May try to get some 100 or 110LL.. then there's a local guy that I can get some 110 from (Race fuel).. not done it yet though.. The bike is fast enough, that would just encourage me to go faster longer...

I have wasted so much $$ on race fuel in the past that it is pitiful. I finally figured out that the high octane fuel was compensating for poor jetting. Higher octane fuel actually leans out a motor. When I would ride from a 500 ft. altitude up to 2000 ft. altitude, it would just run better overall on the 110.

I've tried everything from 85 to 95. The bike just plain runs better on 87 than anything higher.

I run 91 or 93 and the bike ('02 model) seems to like it better than 87...

My '03 owner's manual (U.S.) calls for "unleaded, 86 (or higher)".

I'm pretty sure different countries have different formulas for octane ratings, so what is rated "87" here might be some other number elsewhere.
