Coolant leak

so this is frsutrating. i just fired up the bike let it warm up for a few minutes and tapped the throttle, and i noticed when i did that it started leaking some coolent. so i shut it down and couldnt find anything, fired it back up did the same thing and again it leaked. im feeling around moving stuff but cant find it. the thing is leaking on the left side from the cover, i think its the clutch cover, if your facing it its wet at the 11 o clock position and runs down from there but i cant find where the hell its coming from, everything around it looks dry. any ideas?

One of the dump hoses ??
There is a chamber between the coolant part of the water pump and the crankcase, it will dump what gets past the seals, specially to avoid the coolant to get into the crankcase and contaminate the oil.
If so water pump seal giving way.

looking at the shop manual it looks like the waterpump is on the right side of the motor but my leak is on the left side. would it still be that seal?

It's on the front of the cover, a small hose, I think it's routed to the left side, you must take the cover off, scrape the old gasket, put a new one, the pump assembly is pressed in place, I never did it, but maybe someone that did can chime in.

If the coolant pump seal let go, there will be coolant leaking from the small weep hole located on the right side crankcase cover.

Mine let go at around 22,000 miles. The pump assembly and seal is pressed in the right crankcase cover. I removed the cover and took it to the shop to have the seal replaced. I think it was about $75 total parts and labor.

The alternator cover is on the left side of the engine, the water pump and the clutch cover are on the right side.

Why not remove the left side fairing side panel...that way you will have a better view of the left radiator and all of the hose connections. It could be something as simple as a loose hose clamp.

Which manual do you have? The Honda shop manual has a very good diagram of the cooling system and hose routing.

I just got the right side weephole issue taken care of. and it cost alot more tha $75. try $250 inlcuding parts and labor. parts alone came to $50 something. cause you have to buy a new clutch cover gasket, a new O-ring for the impellar housing, and the seals (which you need 2). then add labor. either way, they found a bunch of gunk in there and cleaned it out. no more weeping weephole.

I had a weeping weephole.. Then I flushed the coolant system, and put in new coolant using distilled water and it no longer weeps.

But the weephole problem just leaves streaks down the side, it doesn't really leak any large amount.

yeah I know, and its on the right side not the left. I just don't want anybody to go in expecting a cheap easy fix for that issue. it was neither cheap, nor easy. straight forward maybe, but extensive, and you have to be very carefull when seating the new seals. anyway, to the OP, I'd say you need to crack her open and have a look.

Anything off the left side is probably a hose or something. Check the thermostat housing. It's in the Vee on the left side.

Here's a pic of the whole cooling system:

uchi - i know this is an older thread but what was the outcome? i may have a similar problem, i stopped at a traffic light and coolant was dripping down the left side enough to make a small puddle. i checked it out and can't find where it was coming from.

My friends VTR did the exact same thing.
Just tightened up a few of the hose clamps on the left side.
That's all she needed.
It would leak and drip down onto the clutch cover.
Look like it was coming from the actual cover. But you couldn't tell where it was coming from.

Mine did the same thing, took forever to track it down, looked like the lower hose on the coolant reserve/overflow tank was the problem,,, turned out the coolant reserve/overflow tank cracked and would leak when the fluid level reached the crack and the coolant would sit between the the cylinders right under the tank, once it was leaned over on the kick stand it would flow down just the way you described, I put on some JB weld and it's good as new.......
