Well it's official, project SuperTard has been started!
I just ordered a WR250 front end off of ebay, and once it gets here I shall start trying to get it together. I do not know how far I shall get, but hopefully it will be a success.

Not saying the RC51 is a bad bike IN ANY WAY - they're feckin awesome at what they do and I drool every time I see them. I am planning a ride up to Alaska next summer, though, and you can be damn sure that it won't be on my Superhawk! And for $7k, or anything less than $10k (or HALF the price of a GS) that Buell is a steal...
+1
the Buell has evolved into a helluva great all around motorcycle. A great bike even at retail, but if I had the $, I'd be goin after one of those now.

Eric Buell deserves better for his efforts, intensity, and creative thinking. unfortunately, there are many who do not nor will ever realize how great his bikes have become. It takes a while to get established and he just ran out of time a little early. He was definitely on the brink. Down to HD.

I believe that I am the only member here who owns both a Firestorm/Superhawk and a Varadero. The Varadero is an allroads tourer - called the "Gravel Goldwing", and that's pretty accurate.

IMO, the VTR is a much better place to start than the Vara for a hypermotard conversion: stiffer chassis, more power, smaller tank. The chassis is better as a start than a Ducati trellis, once again IMO.

If folk think that hypermotarding will put excess stresses on the rear suspension pivot, then the Vara's is more of a problem than the VTR's. Personally, I doubt that this'd be a problem. (I've motarded in competition on a whole range of things, down to and incuding a 1971 CB500/4 - yes, they made them that early, Ethel...)

I've often thought of buying a wreck and doing the same thing myself, so I'm much interested in your project. Keep us informed, please.

As stated, I got a yz250/wr250 front end off ebay. I shall see if the head bearings fit, and if not I shall order some different ones which fit.
I will also need to find a long-*** brake line.
