I'm looking to invest in new racing helmets and could use some advice. What factors should I consider to ensure maximum safety and comfort? I'm aware of basic certifications like Snell and DOT, but I'm curious about the differences between helmet materials like fiberglass, carbon fiber, and polycarbonate. Additionally, how important are features like ventilation, weight, and fit?
Any brand recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm aiming for a balance between safety, performance, and price.
I've really loved my Shoei's over the years. Most recently the GT-Air one and two's. More of a touring helmet though. I do have a Nicky Hayden Aria that's pretty sweet. It doesn't fit the shape of my head as well as the Shoei's. I'd highly recommend both brands from my own experience.
All else being equal, fit is most important. Different manufactures and the different models within their line will often have somewhat to very different internal shapes. To get the most comfortable fit, you want to match the helmet to your head as close as you can. Do some research on helmet internal shapes and try on as many as you can.
Fiberglass and carbon fiber are going to be the lightest for a given size. Light weight is very desirable and typically more expensive.
