Buying a Firestorm aka Superhawk

Hey guys

Im Forde, from Ireland

I am currently selling my ZX6-R ninja, and i want to purchase a Firestorm as they are called here for my next ride, so i signed up here for some advice

So, what should i look out for on these bikes when i go to view them?

And what are common issues that i should sort out after getting the bike?

Thanks for any help its much appreciated

For interest, heres my current ride which is for sale, the 02 ninja -

The best option for you is to buy the bike that the US never got, that is the updated Euro model from 2001 onwards. It has a 19l tank instead of a 16l, a newer dash with fuel gauge, different clip-ons with a more comfortable position, and a finned regulator/rectifier that was less likely to overheat and die.

As for what to look for, really they are pretty reliable. If it sounds rattly it more than likley will need the CCT's changed, but apart from that they don;t have major issues. Earlier models can have charging problems as well, bit most later bikes will be fine. Apart from that just check the usual stuff like chains and bearings etc. If the gearbox feels bad to you, it is because they all are. LOL. They don't shift well in stock form, but you can do a couple of cheap and quick mods to the linkages improve it a lot.

Hey, welcome. You're not the only NI Biker on here

I'm pretty handy with these bikes (just rebuilt a VTR engine that had lunched its camchain) so if you need any info give me a shout.

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks guys

The one i was looking at is a 1998 with only 10k miles on it, it has been streetfightered with renthals and the like and it has had the ccts changed. If i get it i could fit a later reg/rec and do those linkage mods then.

However if it is sold by the time i get the money for my ninja then ill be looking at any other standard models that are for sale.

Hey paul im sure ill be annoying you for info then lol, we should get out for a spin im in portadown so not too far from you!

Are you on www.nibikers.com? You should head over there if you arent already

What do you guys think of this?

It wouldnt be too hard to put back to standard would it? The guy says he has all the road plastics for it.

Would the engine be ok after being tracked?

Jeebus, that's hideous.

I'd go for one you know the history of, with a logbook, like mine ;-)

I have 2 for sale :

1st 1998, 2 owners from new, R Reg, Silver, 19,000 miles, Stage 1 cams, scorpion exhausts, K+N, Harris rearsets, steering damper, Ohlins rear suspension with remote reservoir, seat hump, carbon hugger, tyres ok, about 1/4 worn.

2nd 1998, S Reg, 28,000 miles, 12 owners (!) Fairing has been repaired, overall reasonable condition, new tyres, engine and suspension are stock.

The 1st one is probably the better bike ;-)

Make me an offer !

Cheers,

Paul.

Yes, it's been dynojetted too. I forgot that :-) and bike #1 has a manual Camchain tensioner on it, the list with tell you that that is 'a good thing '

Ok, there's no rush, get back to me when you like.

I have 2 firestorms and I just don't need 2. I'm happy to be left with bike #2.

Both have 11 months MOT and Tax on them, and I can't ride both at the same time, well, not without it looking a bit daft ...

PM me, and we'll go from there.

Cheers,

Paul.
