Why rebuild? If they're dirty just clean 'em....or rejet.

Like Hawkrider said, go for the jet kit.....You can get that @ any Honda dealer, performance supply, etc.....

yeah?

In the past Ive found at least for my ex kawasaki ninjas, rebuild kits were cheaper than jet kits. Wouldnt I need to upgrade the exhaust etc to do a jet kit and have it run right? I have some stumbling issues and am pretty sure that the carbs need a good cleaning or rebuild. I added some sea foam to my gas and rode tonight for a few hours. Seems alot better but still a little stumble here and there. Im gonna tear it down next day its raining out and take a closer look...maybe I can just clean them up...

Seafoam is some good stuff. If you're still all stock then I would just recommend pulling the carbs and cleaning the jets.

Where/what conditions does the bike stumble?

the stumbles...

It'll stumble around 80 or 90 in 4th, 5th or 6th gear. Full throttle ... stumble...it'll buck like it's about to go but nothing. Sometimes it's fine and it'll pull over 100 hard torquing...I can tell it's definitly the carbs cloggin up. A rebuild kit would be cheap for two carbs thats the only reason Id do it. At least I would know that the carbs were set back to stock and if it was something else I would be positive it was narrowed past the most obvious...carbs.

I'm looking for a kit too, I'm in class now and the first thing we're doing in the general mait course is pulling out our carbs and learning/cleaning or (I want to) rebuild them... If anyone finds a kit, let me know and I'll post it here if I find one as I look around...

To save you a little time, there is no rebuild kit for these carbs.

Yeah, I figured that out... I suppose it's just tear down and rebuild the damn things then eh?

996er - It sounds like you are lean in the midrange (aftermarket pipes on your bike?). To fix this the best thing to do is buy a jet kit from Factory Pro. If you want to go on the cheap you can shim the stock needles using washers from the hardware store. Usually 0.5mm (0.020in) is all you need to clean it up.

Good luck!

I am also having the same problem. Is there a place on the web I can find a step by step manual for a cleaning. Or even a rebuild. I know all I have to.do is clean the jets. But never done it before.

Down load the service manual in the knowledge base and after that you can ask specific questions if needed the first one will be how to get the slide springs back in but we can cover that when you get to that point....

As stated above I'd take a look at the jetting and probably shim the needles. Generally if the bike idles and cruises fine it's not a plugged/dirty carb issue. The pilot jets are the smallest jets in the carbs and are the first to get plugged and are what is being used at idle and just off idle. So if tha'ts fine it's unlikely that the mains or needles are plugged or messed up. It is possbiel but unlikely.

I'd take a look at the carb set up thread that Hawk made in the tech section. It's a great article with tons of great information on setting these things up. I think you'll find that just by going by his recomendations that you'll have a bike that runs great and pulls hard all the way through the rev range and well over 100.

As for the rebuild kits there really isn't any reason for one other than if you have a bad gasket or o-ring. The only ones that really get messed up are the ones on the pilot screws will have a tendancy to get smashed flat over time. They are generally still useable but a "rebuild" kit would be more like a gasket kit that comes with those rubber gaskets/seals.

Mine's in the shop now. It was falling in it's face at 6k. Did that last year and this year, but since I commute on back roads, it didn't bother me. I'll let you know what it turns out to be.

Ok, so I don't have my bike back yet, but they think they found the problem(s).

One of the pilot jets was plugged, and the other was partially plugged. So I said, "OK, so why was it cutting out at 6K?"

The answer....."Well that would be because the HUGE mouse nest in your air box was choking it out at high RPM's."

Pilots jets are easy to clog and hard to clean, that is why I just replace them and the mouse nest has happened to someone else I know so......

Glad to hear you got it sorted

Well, it's not back together yet. Hoping that will take care of the performance issues. It's also getting CCT's and a valve adjustment.

Honda makes a great jet cleaning tool for getting those jets especially the pilots, clear. That and a good bath in carb clean will work well. Well worth the money if you do a lot of rebuilds, but not so much for the single use.

Those rats nests suck. Sounds like you need to ride your bike more to keep them out! LOL! Can't tell you how many times I've seen that working at the bike shop. Thanksfully by the time they usually got to me the actual rats were gone. Though I do recall someone else getting one with a dead rat in it once. That was NASTY!!!!

LOL. The mice moved in while we had 2 feet of snow. Bet they made a REAL mess when I fired it up in the spring!

Yeah no kidding! Kind of makes a guy wonder if they were still in it or if they heard you coming and ran away before you got to the bike and fired it up! At least the air filter generally stops them from getting to the engine side of the air box but sometimes they will eat through that too!
