Talking 4500 Mile Vacation

I just got back from the greatest ride ever. I left on the 19th from my house in St. Louis, MO and rode to Salina, KS. From there I rode to Vail, CO. All I have to say is CO is awesome!!! I have never been to the mountains so this was really cool to ride through them on my bike. After Vail I rode up through Salt Lake City and stopped by the Bonneville Salt Flats. Luckily the salt was groomed because the day before there was an attempt at the world speed record for a diesel powered car. Since i had my luggage and everything strapped onto the bike I only took my Hawk up to 110MPH. It was just cool standing there looking at flats. From there I went down to Ely, NV and continued the next day down to Vegas where I spent 2 days visiting some friends. After Vegas was Phoenix and then the Grand Canyon and Albuquerque, NM then through Tulsa, OK and home. 4500 total miles in 9 days. My knees were the only thing that really bothered me but overall it was a trip of a lifetime.

Sounds awesome! Once I get a new seat I want to try something 400+ in a day, then I can start planning an epic road trip. Right now a tank of gas is about where I start to get pretty uncomfortable.

Did you have cruise, custom seat, tank/tail bag etc?

Our longest day was around 790 Miles. Needless to say I was ready to get the hell off the bike when we got to our destination. My only saving grace is the VistaCruise throttle lock I put on the bike last summer. I rode for almost 40 miles without touching the handlebars once.

I am getting out!!! I am moving to Phoenix AZ to go to Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in January. The only bad part is that I have to sell my bike to pay some bills before I move out there.

Pictures?????

I'm sure you went through my old hometown of Delta, UT? Next trip, take highway 89 down through Kanab then cut across to St. George, then on to LV. Beautiful country out there. Below is a couple pictures of what I'm referring to. I took these on one of my yearly trips to Panguitch, UT. This is Red Canyon just off 89 going towards Bryce Canyon. I took my bro in-laws bike up there for a little corner action.

Hey, you rode right by me! I would have loved to go.

I prefer to do the trip across KS an night, however.

Did you find that your bike ran any differently (richer?) at altitude?

It ran a lot richer up in the mountains. You could tell by the carbon buildup in the exhaust and when we were on the mountain downhills i would coast and it would pop flames about a foot out of both pipes. I was running it pretty hard around in the mountains at night just to get out and have fun!!! It was wierd though, everyone else had major power problems and really couldn't do much more than 55 or 60 through the mountains and I had no problems. I was cruising at 65 in 6th gear and never had to downshift.
