What I did on my Christmas vacation........
Some of you may remember my post about little bikes with big engines.
Specifically my CB-1 with a built F3 motor shoehorned in.
Well, here is what this bike looks like today.
This is the result of about $80 worth of Duplicolor spraypaint, sandpaper scotchguard pads and a lot of labor.
The tailsection I had purchased new about a year ago but never installed, the tank, also new, was a Christmas present from my wife, gotta love her.
The front end is '07 CBR600RR, the headlight is CB900F, aka 919 Hornet etc. ( e-bay )
Rear shock is '93 CBR900RR with an ST1300 spring.
Renthal Handlebars with CRG mirrors and homemade risers with Honda CRF clamps.
Front brake rotors are on loan from a local raceteam crewchief as long as I own the bike...
Gauges are '07 CBR600RR, taillight is '08 CBR1000RR.
Muffler is Ducati 1098, sounds bitchin, and looks great, IMHO anyway.
Let me know what you guys think.

Been waiting to see this. You've always been so excited about it whenever I've talked to you. I have to say it looks really good..... great!
Can you post a picture with something in it to show the size of the bike.
The CB-1 is a really small bike. Post a pic of it with something to show scale.
Like a fig newton or a weiner dog.
Looks like a keeper, you are planning on keeping it right?
Upcoming mods? (Cause we are always tinkering...)

Thanks everybody, glad you all like it.
As far as size goes, I'll park my VTR behind it this weekend, that ought to show scale.
Also, to elaborate on the weight, it holds 3.2 gallons of gas, 3 qts of oil and about a half gallon of coolant, so I'm guessing about 35 lbs of liquids. Which brings dry weight in right at or below 370 lbs : )
That reminds me, I weighed the VTR at the same time and it came in at 446 wet, not bad either.
As far as the bars being open, they have a plug about two inches in from the end.
But why the concern ? Spiders ?

It's a Renthal aluminium bar, wall thickness about 3mm, nicely radiused. So it'd be like being stabbed by a butter knife instead of a switch blade.
The main reason the bar looks the way it does is because I'm holding out for Triumph bar end mirrors and I didn't want to trim the bar just yet.
The CRGs work but I really want the Triumph mirrors.

Honda still doesn't make turnsignals I want. At least not for the bikes that come over here.
Those are '05 GSXR, just like on the VTR.
And here are a couple of pics that might show scale.
The guy in shorts is my 11 year old who's 5'2", 97 lbs
The other guy is me, 5'11", 206 lbs.
And then there is my line up of bikes that I currently own and ride.

Everythin looks great.
Have you seen the 09' blinkers, rear on 1000RR, they are quite and upgrade from previous. The one's you have fit the bill just fine.
What is the tank pad on the hawk?
Bark busters on the hawk?
I was looking forward to the CB-1 weiner dog pic. I guess I'll have to wait.
I'll see if I can get one of the cat or dog with the 954 this weekend.
Great job! Are you keeping, selling, what's next?

I don't really like the CBR's but they are at least a step in the right direction.

Self adhesive Anti skid vinyl sheet, holding up well so far.
Bark busters on the hawk?
Acerbis Uniko hanguards to killl the chill, learned that from the XR.

Sorry no weiner dogs handy.....

there is some thought to selling the VTR.........
My buddy Joe wants six carbs on his Benelli Sei and would pay me with a basket case Ducati...
In the meantime I'm supposed to get an RD400F and an R90S running.

Remove the engine, tape off all openings, wash again.
Take a red scotch brite pad and scuff every square inch, rinse and look for the water to sheet.
If the water beads instead of sheet, scuff some more and wash again.
Repeat till every surface sheets when wet. When water sheets it indicates that the surface is chemically clean and will accept paint without fisheyes etc.
Remove all but two or three cover bolts (ACG,Clutch,Pulse Generator )
Remove starter motor and water pump and plug holes.
Duplicolor suggests priming bare metal, I didn't, so far so good.
I used Cast Coat Iron (DE1651) on the cases and head, it was supposed to come out like cast iron, but came out in a dark bronze color instead, even after 2-3 coats.
I had used it on the rear rotor hub, which was black to start with and it came out like cast iron, but on the bare aluminum it came out bronze, and I really like it.
The covers and the water pump were painted with Low Gloss Black (DE1634) and I wish I had painted the frame with that instead of the Satin Black Wheel Coating.
I had the engine sitting on a moving dolly and started painting every surface I could reach, let it dry and the flipped the engine over and repeated the process.
Once the complete engine was painted I removed the covers and painted them with the low gloss black.
Bolted everything back together with all new hardware and installed the engine in the frame. (All the covers are held on by 8mm flange bolts, 29 of which are 6x28mm)
Talk about being paranoid about scratching the engine/frame during the installation.
What worked really well was to leave the engine sitting on the dolly, holding the frame over then engine with the motor mount holes lined up while my wife slid the bolts into place.
The swingarm was already mounted to the chocked rear wheel on the lift, so I just pushed the dolly/engine/frame combo on the lift, lined up the swingarm pivot bolt and pushed it home.
Jacked up the frame and installed the front end which I had already fitted prior to taking everything apart.
The front end swap was the catalyst for the whole painting project, it looked so clean and shiny while the rest looked like the 20 year old bike it is.
Hope that answers most of your questions.

Looks like your 11 year old is ready to take it for a spin....watch out.
He is riding dirt bikes at the moment and I don't know what my reaction will be when he turns 16 and wants to ride on the street.
Great job. It looks very well finished, would mistake it for a factory bike.
