160.2 miles on 3.5 gallons of gas

all freeway miles, stayed ducked behind the screen as much as possible (stock screen)...

I reset my trip OD everytime I fill up, and I always fill to the exact same place with the bike standing up straight (which is why I'm confident about the gallons figure).

BTW, I couldn't find anything via search...but do any of you know a place to get a double bubble screen but not smoked? Every after market screen I've seen so far is tinted, I want the raised bubble but not the tint.

Is your speedo/odo calibrated correctly? Just curious because people rarely mention this when stating milage. And this is important unless you're using a different method of calculating distance.

And I am also wondering about a windscreen as you described. It will be for a track only bike, so i'd rather it be clear than smoked just to look cool.

Hey, that's actually a really good question, and I didn't think of that before...I don't know if the speedo is calibrated correctly, however I just now checked my exact route on google maps and it adds up to 161 miles, so a difference of .8 miles vs my trip OD....I guess that means it's fairly accurate.

This is not described as "double bubble" but is clear and appears to me to have the same profile as double bubble screens I have seen.

Time for a tip from the old guys.....

If you do use a Double Bubble style screen and it is not tinted, make sure you cover you gauges if you leave the bike parked in the sun.

If you don't do this, the shape of the screen will focus the sun light and melt a hole (or at least melt an ugly spot) in one of your gauge faces....

+1 - You didn't mention your gearing - stock or otherwise. In my experience the error of the speedometer is not identical to the error of the odometer. Not sure if that varies from cluster to cluster or not.
I run 16/43 and a speedohealer. My speedo is as close as I can get it as compared to GPS, but my odo under reports by ~6%

If your gearing is stock I bet your odo is perhaps 1% maybe 2% high sounds like you got a solid 45mpg - pretty good

I think its canada. maybe you meant Km/gallon? that would be most of our typical mpg rates.

Nope, I live in sunny California, haha...and the bike is a US bike with the speedo and odo in miles...the ride was from Buttonwillow Raceway Park, to Alhambra, CA, and then to a gas station near where I hang my hat:

Much appreciated! Since you've brought the issue to my attention that gives me an idea...to keep the clear screen but avoid burning a hole in my gauges I'll see if I can find a tint shop that will cheaply apply the clear 3M window tint (not really a 'tint', but it blocks UV rays) to it.

It's possible because you were riding downwind of the NW prevailing winds. Most likely you were at a low rpm at a low speed possibly a traffic draft as well. My airplane used to double it's fuel economy simply due to winds, rpm and throttle setting.

I also thought I might mention my friend Doug with an sv650. He used to brag at the coffee shop about his awesome fuel mileage.

So, one week I carried a liter of gas in my tank bag. While he was in for coffee, I slipped it in his tank a couple times. When we all filled up I would hear him ramble "really I swear I am getting over 65 mpg...Honest!"

We were all laughing like mad- before I told him and showed him the empty water bottle that smelled of fuel.

I picked up one of those off e-bay straight from China. It came broken in two, but the seller refunded my money promptly. Its a double bubble style windshield, but its pretty stiff and thick acrylic, it doesn't flex at all.

so you don't recommend that screen?

btw I'm not bragging usually I get 36-37mpg like most everyone else on here, haha...but I thought it was cool I made it home on one tank, thought for sure I was going to have to stop....I kept the revs low and did "car" speeds...70-75mph...here in CA you can usually go 80-85 on a bike without getting stopped on the freeway...I've ridden past CHP doing almost 90 and had them ignore me.

I have to chime in on this one, I bought Cliby's Super Hawk and while I still had dry roads to play on and believe me this bike is all about "playing" I AVERAGED 22 mpg... I saw one tank dip almost into the teens at 20mpg.

The fuel light is coming on between 65-70 miles.

This is all aggressive city riding and the bike never sees 6th gear.

It gets half the mileage that my ZX12R got and is twice as much fun to ride!

I am looking forward to a real road trip and filling up every 100 miles. At this rate at least my *** never gets sore on the balsa wood seat pad Cliby installed in order to save weight.

I think your experience is pretty typical of a properly tuned VTR.

Here's the first thread I ever started on the site way back when;

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...er-tank-12381/

If somebody is getting much less than 40 mpg on the highway, their bike is in a seriously bolixed up state of tune.

I guess it's kinda a "you get what you pay for" kinda thing. I drilled multiple holes along where this windshield split in half and safety wired it together. Kinda frankenstein, but it'll work if I track my parts bike VTR this summer???

The acrylic is about 1/8" thick, maybe more...

Maier, LP, Puig, Zero Gravity... all make much better windscreens. That being said, it's $23 bucks??? What have you got to lose?

Agreed. Getting 40+mpg on the highway (running the speed limit!) is quite normal. My personal best is 52.5 MPG

I don't doubt you are getting those numbers especially if you're tucked in. I'd typically get 42 (w/o tucking behind the stock screen too much) as long as I ran at a reasonable speed and didn't hit alot of traffic. The hard part is staying out of the throttle for that many miles!

A topic that has come up often... even by me when I was a nOOb to VTR's.

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...d-trips-26652/

If your bike is not set up extremely radical. If you ride it as a fairly constant speed such as what one would do when touring.

Mid-40's MPG can be done. I got up to 46mpg at best. Never broke 75mph. No wind, few hills, almost zero traffic. Other times I was getting in the 40-43 range.

My '98 was stock with Yosh pipes and mild-jetting.
