Stock radio/cd problems

Stock radio/cd player in a '99 Mazda (same as Ford Ranger) B3000. When playing a cd it sounds like only one channel is coming through both sides with an echo. Audio from the radio is fine. Could this be a dirty lens on the laser? Anyone have experience with the cleaning devices that go into the cd slot? I have done some research on this type of method and got mixed answers, mostly not good results.
I don't want to replace the unit if I can avoid that. Don't want to spend a lot o f$$ so I've ruled out an aftermarket unit for now. I'm thinking that a used late model Ford e-bay unit is the way I should go if I have to replace it.
