It's Freak' in Cold !

The snow was firm and crunchy walking to work this morning. I couldn`t help but think how nice the snowmobile trails must be. A decent sled with studs in the track and sharp carbides on the skis under these conditions is about as close to heaven as one can get IMO.....

I see 2 different snowmobile trails going to work every day. You bet
your *** they are in great shape.

That's some damn cold temps! We're freezing in the single digits but it's the negative wind chill that really makes me want to migrate south!
I heat w/ wood (which is free for me) so my unfinished basement is about 98 right now. Curious, what do you use for heat and how much does it cost ya?

Today on my vtr dash thermo it said 14F!! My record ride is zero F but still, this gets your attention. Tires get a little bowling ballish, gotta drop the pressure to get some feel back.
I really hate this but man it sure makes summer sweeter. Did I mention that the days are already getting longer?

I wish it could be as warm as it is for some of you guys.....woke up this morning to ambient temp of -34C, and with the windchill it felt like -44C. Been like this all week, seen windchills of almost -50C at times! It literally will take your breath away...but my son got a kick out of the trick of throwing a pail of hot water into the air and seeing it turn to snow by the time it hits the ground....now thats cold!

How about a vacation in Siberia, I hear it's warmer there

Funny you say that, up until a few years ago, my city was the coldest city in the world with a population over 600,000...now we're second to some place in Mongolia. You get used to that kind of cold though, nothing really changes, everything goes on like normal...I work for a school division in the transportation dept and we dont cancel school until the temps go below -45C with the windchill! Big diesel buses sound quite angry starting at that temp!

When I was attending high school in Buffalo NY one winter the temp never went above 0F for a month. I went to the bus stop every day, jacket unzipped, no hat, no gloves. You never realize how bad it is until you move away. Then it hits you... "wow, that really sucked!"

Usually I don't mind if its above 20F but today I must be feeling my age. I went out to the Bret Cave to add dose of ethanol treatment on top of the Stabil'd gas already in the topped-off VTR tank (carbs drained, cylinders fogged) and snow thrower gas can (darn forgot the snow thrower tank), and I couldn't have been out there 10 minutes (didn't bother to turn on the heater) and I was shivering in jeans with a down jacket. Lowest we've gotten in 2 years was last Tuesday at -5F plus wind chill.
ICRP engines run better in the cold with the denser air but only to a point. Diesels have a hard time starting without block heaters and oil treatment. Gas turbine engines also do better to a point. In 1983 when we lifted the 22,000# antenna tower sections on Sears Tower (now Willard Tower or Big Willie) we were worried as heck if the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane would get it up (I knew I couldn't) at -24F with -60F windchill. I was out in it for a week doing QA on the sections. My 1979 VW Sirocco with CIS mechanical fuel injection would not start. It was so cold you could spit and it would freeze before it hit the ground.
Wish I was back in San Diego on my 1961 Matchless G80cs Cafe!

Primarily oak but I've just started getting maple and shagbark hickory with a few ash here and there. I have about 3-4 years worth seasoning now. I fell one walnut last week. I'm told it isn't the best for fire wood so we'll see. It smelled awesome.
