Wont turn over after new R/R

I replaced my R/R today with one I got from Partsman. After installing, when I press the start button there is a buzzing coming from the starter relay. I checked the main fuse and it is fine. I started her yesterday with the old R/R with no problems. I am not home right now as I had to leave before I could trouble shoot, however I am looking for suggestions on what to check. When I get home I will check all the connections and try to short circuit the relay to see if I get anything, but it doesnt make sense that it would be fine yesterday and not today. So, any ideas on what to check other than what I said?

Was it a stock replacement? If so, try the old one and see if it starts okay. You may have gotten a bum part.

Otherwise, check the wiring. Did it require rewiring the connection? Did you check battery voltage and ground connections? Backtrack, checking everything you did to install the new R/R.

It was a stock replacement from a 2005 with 5k from what I was told.

I hooked up jumpers to it and it turns over but won't fire up. It tries to then dies, choked or not.

aja, the r/r came off a running Super Hawk.....Make sure your battery is charged all the way. Sometimes a bad r/r can make the battery go bad....get your battery checked. If your battery is bad I have a good one I can send you for free.......any questions give me a ring....Sent you a PM

Partsman,

I just put a new battery in and still won't start. It turns over now but nothing else. There is a pretty strong gas odor coming from the exhaust when it cranks, so I think it may be flooded, but I've never had anything not start eventually. I tested the r/r and its good so that's not the problem. I did get it to start for a second but being cold it died.

Any suggestions? I'm at a loss for what to check now.

Kill switch?

Not trying to insult, but it happened to me once. I never use the kill switch, but it got tripped while moving it around. I was in the mountains and thought it was just flooded at first.

You might want to pull the plugs and make sure you don't have a load of gas in the cylinders. Then try starting with the throttle open to clear the flood, if that's the cause.

Ok I feel dumb now.

No gas in bike. I know I know, rookie mistake. Now I know my gas light doesn't work now though.

Partsman, thanks! If anyone is looking for parts, I would suggest partsman. I got the part really fast, it was packaged great, and he (Gareth) even gave me his number to call him for help. Thanks again!

Curious, how do you explain the buzzing you heard from the starter relay? (In your first post.) So, is it starting now?

From experience the starter relay will just make a click / buzz if not getting enough umph from the battery if it is if f*cked, loose connection on battery (vibration can loosen up bolt) or if the connector to the starter motor is corroded under the rubber hood (here in the UK it is essential to keep it greased up/vaselined up in salty winters).

Probably in this case from repeatedly turning it over till battery was low. - so enough to activate the starter relay but not enough umph to keep turning the starter.

Exactly. R/R fried the battery, I got a new one (and gas) and it fired right up
