Vtr1000 dies randomly
Vtr1000 dies randomly
Hi Guy's,
This is my first post, although I have been a member for quite a time here.
I've just been enjoying looking at and reading some very interesting posts.
I'm from the UK and a long standing member on the vtr1000.org site, although I'm known as sirch345 on there.
Have any of you guy's found a cure for the random cutting out that the Superhawk (Firestorm in the UK) suffers, usually at tick-over rev's, although I understand not everyone's bike suffers from this. I did read somewhere that the later Superhawks had their inlet manifolds modified to help eliminate this, but my bike is the earlier version, a 1999 model.
I was advised to adjust the air/mixture screws as it could be running rich and gassing up when idling. I have tried that but it hasn't really made any difference.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,
Cheers,
Chris.

Cheers guy's for your suggestions.
What baffles me though is, if it's too rich or too lean on tick over why does it only cut out randomly, you'd think it would be doing it on a regular basis.
Chris.
PS. After some more searching I found this! It looks like a problem I'll just have to live with?

You don't have to live with it! Adjust the mixture screws to 2.0 turns out (stock exhaust) or 2.25 turns out (for aftermarket).
Either buy a carb sync tool and sync them yourself or pay the dealer for an hour of labor. Don't let them charge you more.

Cheers for the advice Greg. I normally carry out all my own servicing etc and I do have a carb balancer, but I must admit I've not check the carbs for a while!
Those mixture settings you've suggested, do you think they will be the same for my bike as I live in the UK?
Also have you cured this problem on your bike? and what rev's have you set your bike to tick over at?
Cheers,
Chris.

Yup, should be the same for non-US bikes. Granted, I've got a lot of mods on my bike, and it's tuned well. Never spits, dies, or bogs on me at all. I may have to adjust a hair since I swapped the single Mori can out for the Jardines.
my bike has the same problem I have stnc carbs change pilot jets adjusted mixture scews now at 3 x out still some time at idle it pops & stops I just live with it but turn idle up to 12 to13 k it is better stops less
Hawkrider, yes I did notice in your signiture how many mods your bike has. Very impressive!
I will have another attempt at adjusting the mixture screws, then balance carbs again, once the weather gets better!
Yellowstorm, as I said in my first post I have tried adjusting the mixture screws before (addmittedly not both 2.25 turns out) but I didn't find it made that much difference!

greg baffles are out have tryed pilot jets from std 45 up to 48 then 50 to ritch mixture. screws from 1.5 out to 3.5 out 490oms on carb ignition std just likes to stop at idle carby stnc every time I made adjustment just found high idle speed the only way to stop it from stopping at idle when riding the bike. set it up at home give the bike a rev will not stop sounds good. go for a ride 45 mins farts then stops at idle. I am over it tank bolts near worn out from taking on & off
Cheers for your advice guy's.
I have at last got around to checking to see if my carbs were out of sync, which they were.
With the carbs now in sync I have found it a big improvement!
Many thanks,
Chris.
