Very weird issue for me

Ok guys, i had the bike out friday and put about 80 or so miles on the bike just going to work. the issue i had and i am perplexed to why or what caused it.

i am on the highway on the backend of my trip and while cruising in 6th gear at about 70miles I lose all power, there is nothing on the gauges and the engine is off. as i float down the road it comes back to life with a huge backfire (expected) and i continue on my journey. about another 5 miles and it repeats same thing.

its a 2003 with about 14,000 miles on it.

Any ideas what caused this and how to not have it happen again??

It might be the tank ventilation tube routing. Is it all stock or has some rerouting of the tank tubes been done (due to removal of evaporation canister, for instance)?

My bike has died in the rain and occasionally after filling up. It runs again after opening the tank cap to allow more air in the tank - it's related to the hose routing.

did the engine quit and all the electrics go out? people have reported the electronic guages doing weird things before the final burn up of the R/R. Might be a good place to start

Check the simple stuff first. Main fuse plugged in good, battery terminals tight? While you're checking give a visual to the plug on the RR.

Has any wiring been messed with recently?

Well yeah my gauges went out then came back on. that happened both times

The only thing i have done electric wise is change out the battery but i made sure my connections were/are tight.

The tank is all stock nothing done to the routing tubes.

I am starting to think the r/r is the culprit..

well, are you gonna check the R/R or what??? but coincidently i had this problem with my cb and the vent tube for the tank was kinked and no gas was draining down to the carbs, and then it would off of a sudden work again.

yeah i plan on looking at it today or tomorrow once i get out of work. Couldn't do it over the weekend cause i had my dishwasher decide to blow a hole in it and leak so i spent my weekend working on that. but once i get out of work i plan on doing it.

check and clean your ground connections.
check all of your connections for corrosion.

just replace the r/r if its not it than you saved yourself a problem later anyways. I do think it is the R/r though, weird gas issues wouldn't make your gauges go on and off.

I am ordering the R/R tonight or first thing in the morning. I figure it is best to replace it anyway.

Whats puzzling me is that i am reading the posts and i am seeing allot of R/R issues, isnt that strange???

The R/R is one of the main problems with hawk, along with the CCT's. Change these 2 things out and you'll have a long and happy life together.

Not to fight/contradict everyone... but I don't think it's your R/R.... once the R/R does go, your running purely on battery power, so once things start to go out (dash, lights, engine), they stay out until you charge/replace the battery.

If it's shutting off then suddenly then kicking back on I'd do like Hawster recommended and check your connections to the battery, the ground and the sidestand switch as well... as if that's loose, it could shut the bike off, then allow it to kick back on when it gets moved agian.

yeah i checked the battery tonight and it is tight. I have an alarm on the bike (while i lived in Ft Lauderdale, had to have it) and made sure the alarm didnt interfere and the battery posts are not corroded.

I am going to check my r/r tomorrow once i locate my damn altimeter (brother used it and hasnt bothered to put it back)
