Transmission Problem

How much will it cost to replace a 2nd gear synchronizer on a 99 hawk? I'm looking to replace mine cause I'm having some problems with it.

thanks

Hmmm, um....I hate to be the one to break it to you but motorcycles don't have synchronizers. Describe what it's doing and we'll try to help you out here.

lol whups, shows how much of a bike vs. car guy I am.

Its doing what having a broken syncro would do in a car. What I mean by this is that when I try to shift into second gear from first, it either doesn't want to go into 2nd and the shift level will either vibrate (get slapped around) really hard and go in, or get slapped around really hard and won't go in, and will just get in neutral.

This only happens if I am above 3krpm in first gear, and it gets worse as the rpms go higher up.

Now downshifting from 3rd into 2nd it doesn't "slap" or grind but it clicks into 1st very very hard. The bike tells you its in first, and it makes sure you know it.

Any thoughts?

I thought it was syncro, but appearntly bikes don't have them. So is it a problem with my clutch not engaging/disengaging fully? Is it an oil (hyrdrolic/engine) problem?

This is a common problem with the SH. Do a search to find out what some ppl have to to help with the shifting. I'm too lazy to do the search for ya and too cheap to fix mine. Sorry lol

I think what might be happening is you're not giving the shifter it's full throw on upshifts. Try adjusting the lever down. There are two locknuts on the linkage. Loosen them (one is reverse threaded) and rotate the link to move the lever up and down to fit you.

mini4m3;

The 1-2 shift is something a lot of VTR owners complain about. It was annoying the hell out of me on mine until I stopped using 40 weight oil and switched to a SG/JASO MA 20w50 motor oil. The problem flat out went away.

Honda approves of 20w50 down to freezing. My 1-2 shift now snicks just like the rest of my upshifts. I don't know why it made such a difference but at least on my bike it was like night and day.

Thanks guys, I'll check the link first (I am almost a foot taller than the previous rider, so maybe). Then I was gonna do a oil change. I'll let you guys know what the results are asap.
