Too much sag with .85s

OK, my old front end had .85s from RT in there and felt stiffish. I was able to get 15mm free sag and 25-30mm rider without difficulty. My 2002 954 front end with USD forks, new everything inside, and new RT .85s sits at 32mm free sag and 42mm with rider. This is with the recommended
7 turns in of preload. What gives? Any ideas?
Maybe there are 40 turns of preload and I should just crank'em tighter......maybe my brand new .85s are actually .75s......

Many who run the RC forks add a 10mm spacer on top of the spring to get the sag correct... maybe you need to do the same?

Hmmm....well, I put the stock spacers back in when I rebuilt them. The RT springs were the same length as the stockers. The front end works WONDERFULLY

whoops...got cut off.....
works wonderfully....well worth all the fuss.
I don't know how many turns the preload adjusters have and the manual doesn't say and I don't want them at full load anyway. I guess I'll crank'em down and see, and if I can get them right without resorting to full preload then I'm good to go. If it takes full preload I'll have a conversation with RT as the .85s come from their site recommendation.

Only thing I can think of is the 929/954 might weigh a bit less than the VTR and effect how much weight is on the front.... I would think that might effect which springs you should get...

Also..... LMK what length the springs you are using.... I have an extra couple sets of stock RC51 springs... .95s standard... If they are the same length, maybe you can try them.

I think the 7 turns in of preload is an arbitrary, meaningless number. You should be able to go with more preload without getting weird results, although I do think the RT recommendations are a little on the soft side for street bikes.
By the way, the 954 forks have 16 complete turns of preload adjustability.

Thanks again you guys......what would I do without this forum.
So if I have 16 turns to play with I'llcrank them down to twelve or whatever, and check sag etc. I weigh 165 and the bike has a few pounds less than stock and I ride aggressively.......RT said .85s. As I said, my last exp with RT ended up fairly stiff.... .85s as well. Odd.
If I can't get it right w/o going to 16 turns in....I'll give you a call SloHawk and try a pair of those. Mine are 250mm...just under 10".

When you measure sag, are you using the averaging method to account for stiction???
