stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

there seems to be a lot posts about CCT tensioners.
I have been told that the stock ones may 'block' after adjusting valve clearance ( but never after a simple valve clearance check)

Adjusting valve clearance, you need to release the cam chain tension. So you have to block CCT tensioners to avoid them to push automatically during their remove operation.
Am I wrong ?
I've been told that re-mounting them after adjusting valve clearance, the CCT tensioners sometimes stay "blocked".

Are the stock CCT tensioners unreliable even if we don't touch them ?
After how much miles, Do I have to replace them ?
Which ones ? Honda ones ?

They virtually always fail slowly and perceptably. You can hear them going.

There is no need to do anything to them for a valve check. You only need to key them back if you remove the cams (to replace a shim.)

it will sound like a metallic rattling coming from the engine, that will go up with engine speed, and may go away off idle. You can access the tensioners easily, so if you have a stethoscope, you'll really hear it!

This is how my valves looked like after the CCT died:
Happened suddenly and with no warning after 24000km!

sorry for the bad quality pic.

Which CCT die ? Front/rear ?

Which type of CCT DOT ? White/pink/orange ?
Which part number ? 14520-MBB-013 or 14520-MBB-003 ?

My rear CCT is a pink one.

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

It was the front, both CCT were with a white dot now both orange!

It was right before clearance check.
The clearance of the back cilinder was OK.

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

Did you unbolt CCTs to do your valve clearance check ?

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

Then it isn't your "valve clearance check" that causes your CCT to fail.
You did it by your own ?

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

The first (white) versions of the CCTs just break.

And yes I did it on my own. (I do more things on my one)

SO the general thought with this post is that I should spend the $100+ and buy some CCT's for my 2002 SH? I currrently have 7800miles on it. I hear the chain noise when I ride. I thought it was valves clicking....shows what I know!

Waooowww !!! What a big job you've done !!!
CCT fails after putting oversized pistons ?

You really think that only the white version is supposed to fail ?

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

CCT failed before engine overhaul.

Don't know if only the white fail. I'm not going to wait until the orange do also, I'm going to replace them periodicly. Maybee APE CCT, still thinking about that. They look so fragile.

Re: stock CCT tensioners unreliable ?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the APE bolt only have to push down? How strong does it need to be as long as it doesn't have the stock springs that break?
