Spark Plug Removal

I just recently bought a 1998 vtr1000 superhawk and i need to replace the spark plugs.

Two questions, how much do i need to take off the bike to get to the front plug and is there a special tool that honda sells to get into the socket well because my deep wells outer diameter was too thick.

You have to take the plug boot off. There is a spark plug tool in the bike's tool kit if you have the kit.

I think they made it easy to remove the front plug so you can use a bore scope to check for piston damage when the MCCT fails.

Yeah hawke let me translate for VTR1000F, search Regulator/rectifiers and mcct aka manual cam chain tensioners. Very very critical you take care of these issues. You're welcome.

There are a few threads about this if you search. I think one of the sockets that fit through the cylinder is a craftsman. But don't take my word for it, I may be wrong.

As for the front, you don't need to remove anything unless you are not all that well equiped. If you have a few extensions, and a u-joint you'll be able to reach the plug. The rear, gas tank needs to go.

Welome to the forum.

I'd like to see you remove a spark plug without removing the boot, Jack.

I ran into this problem when I first changed my plugs, I bought the tool kit OEM one since I did not have a tool kit.

No special tool just to remove the plugs, just a bit of patience and knowledge. Welcome to the forum!

Mostly, but at the same time, it takes the correctly fitting socket, as most deepwells will not fit in the head recess bore.

the Tool kit one does of course, and a very thin wall deep well socket will.

Welcome aboard Hawke. A service manual will also work wonders for you if you're looking to do some of your own work on the bike and aren't familiar with it already.

I use a Gear Wrench 18mm chrome deep 3/8 drive socket to remove the plugs fits in no problem. Also I use a long extension with a swivel for the front plug so nothing has to be moved out of the way.

Just replaced my plugs the other day. You'll have to lift the tank at the front (leaving the rear bolt in place) to get at the rear plug. I did not need to remove the tank.
