Running Rich?

Well,

I have searched on here and I have not been able to locate a similar issue. I have a mostly stock bike with the baffles removed, pair mod completed, the carbs were just synced. I bought the bike form SPDRCR a member on here. It is a 98 with 39000 miles on it.

As for the issues.

I have to use choke no matter how warm the bike is, and it takes forever to warm up. I am talking 5 miles at 80mph and get of on the exit and it dies. But 10mins later its fine. I only get high 20's mpg and it smells rich.

The TPS mod has not been completed, I took it to a local shop and they said to put a BMC in it to see if it will lean it out, it that right??? Also will a jet kit fix this or is that used just to richen a bike. I am at a loss and am running out of cash, my wife added it up I have spent 1500.00 in the last two weeks on it lol.

Could there be an issue with the carbs, like being dirty?

Any thoughts?

Sounds like the BMC or a K&N might help, but make sure you cut the air dam off the old filter and install it with the new one to help keep the turbulence down in the air box. I haven't re-jetted anything yet, but there are plenty of folks here who have and I think they'll tell you that re-jetting will likely fix the problem, but you may need a tuner with a dyno to get it done right....

If you have to use the choke to run, then it is lean and not rich. Pulling the choke **** enriches the mixture, not leans it out.

And running with the choke on will make it smell rich. My guess is that you have to clean the carbs. There is probably some gunk - varnish in there that is messing up the jetting.

If I were in your shoes I would run a few tanks with seafoam through there to see if that helps.

And a side note... Running the choke for to long might make you need a new engine... So keep that to a minimum...

Prior to the TPS adjustments my SH was impossible to start and ran poorly until warm. Now it starts right up and runs well, no rejetting yet, but that is in the plan.

Can the TPS correct it running rich, or at least make it appear that it is?

Check the diaphragm in the fuel petcock. If it is busted, you will run lean and smell of petrol.

Check all the vacuum and fuel lines at the rear of the tank. Also check the caps / plugs in the lines that we used for the carb sync.

No, but it will remove a symptom that can be confused with incorrect jetting. Results seem to vary with the TPS adjustment. It made a very big difference for me, others it has not. Read the KB thread on this - it is excellent.

The PO for my bike put a jet kit in, I do not know what it is, but it is not bad, rich if anything. I have a Factory 1.1 kit on order since I cannot leave well enough alone. I will be better able to comment on jetting once I mess with that.

Yes, do not add it all up with your wife, big mistake. Sorry I had to...

Matt,

I will just wait till you have time to help me mess with it. I am off till Wednesday next week so whenever you have the time. I just don't want to mess it up more by fugging with stuff I don't know about.
