its easier if you tell us the problems you have with the bike.
but,bad R/R could cause
dimming lights
no charge
faulty gauges
dead/dying battery
no electrical
burning smell or fire,it has happened before
blows fuses
there is many other stuff, but like i said,if you tell us the problems you are having,we might be able to figure it out.

one day after a short 10 min ride I had to hit the start button repeatedly to get it to turn over and start acted like the battery was dead then like the third try it would fire up and then it went back to normal. so i didn't know if it could have been intermittently charging or maybe the started go great soaked? battery tested good gauge lights sometimes flutter if the bikes in nutrel and u rev it up.I was just more curious I suppose as to what the commen signs were to see if any matched what I had experienced

Get a volt-ohm meter and do some basic checking. Otherwise we're all just throwing darts...

It's relatively accessible... any MOSFET motorcycle R/R will work. Look for part numbers with an FH at the beginning.

Look at Tweety's MOSFET thread and God forbid you want more information than that, go ahead and ask in there...

With your engine shut off you should see at least 13 volts at the battery terminals. With engine running you should see ~14.5V over most of the RPM range from idle to 5K. Slightly more or less for either value may mean an older but still useable battery. But if you see more than a volt difference either way something is not good.

I used a different type replacement R/R, seems like there are several choices, all of them better than the stock R/R.
