R/R Question

I got my apes ready to install and am also looking at doing the Regulator swap. I'm looking to use one of the mosfet units and was curious if only the unit from an R1 would work or is a unit from a ZX14 or ZX10 the same/compatible?
I will be purchasing the wiring from Eastern beaver for it

All R/R's are compatible with a few select exceptions... They all have the same job, to provide a stable 12V system (no, not actually 12V) from an higher AC current from the stator...

Some, very few, have a bunch of odd wiring that needs to be hooked up for them to provide the correct output, but as long as the R/R has 3 wires going in from the stator and 2 going out (+ & -) then it's compatible...

Sidenote, some might have 2 pairs of wiring ie two + and two -, but works the same...

So Tweety, The R1 has been the choice of most of the conversions... And as you specified all R/R do the same thing -is there any of the vast selection.. that is a direct replacement(plug match-up) and be the UP-Grade.. as the question inquires-and we all want..
Which is the best?

Look at the RR sticky thread.(I think its sticky). Eastern beaver has wire plugs that just plug into the R1/R6 unit. Not quite an exact replacement but almost plug-n-play.

R1/R6 is the "preferred" swap. The best??? jury is still out. Basically from my amateur perspective the R1/R6 works really well because there is wiring readily available for one. And second, it is a MUCH larger unit which dissipates heat more efficiently and thus will not blow up like the itty bitty stock unit.

Well, like smokinjoe and Mattua said, the reason the R1/R6 is is the preffered one's is that there are almost plug and play harnesses available... Not all like to play with cable crimpers... But as far as I can tell from a little research, the ZX10 & ZX14 actually use the same part as the R1/R6...

Thanks guys, I also found the part to look identical and part numbers matched, just wanted to get additional input.

Eastern Beaver also offers the plugs that will work with the Kawasaki units, making them almost plug and play.

I currently have a ZX-6R unit in my Superhawk. I didn't experience any charging problems last year while using it.

Thank you, Tweety,SmokinJoe, Mattaua for the researched information. The 2001 battery has been checked twice this week, and is showing signs of low voltage. Being that battery is new (a month) and battery tendered at night. And being that the bike is pristine (except for the tasteful mods) She is showing time to start making the up-grade of age(14,500miles)

no. The R/R actually transfers heat to the frame, removing contact area will allow the R/R to heat up more. (think of the subframe as a great big heatsink)

It's a bad design (using cheaper diodes rather than better mosfets) that is the real problem.

will a RR with 2-power & 2 grounds work if I just splice them together and hard wire it? Mine went bad and the only 1 in town I can find without waiting to order-it has 2-plugs ins-1 with the 3-yellow and then the other one has 2-grn/2 red-supposedly for a VFR 250? does it matter which way the 3-yellows are hooked up? thank you in advance-

In theory, that should work just fine... But I'm pretty certain it's going to be completely overmatched by the demands of the VTR in terms of power needs... A 250 is most likely not even close in powerconsumtion as a VTR...

If it works, consider it a very temporary replacement, and get yourself a good replacement ASAP... It's not that expensive to get them on eBay, and it doesn't take that long...

R1

I installed a r1 in the location of the factory one. Its been 10k and one year later and still running strong. Not sure if this helps but changed all lights to led except for the headlight and that is a 35 hid. I planed to transfer the unit to the project hawk later this summer. I was thinking of mouning a small heat sink between the frame and unit at that time.

ok, sorry to ask this but is there an aftermarket R/R that is better than the stock or factory original that will just plug right in without having to cut or splice any wires or change the plug?

The short and simple answer... No!

Everything that plugs in without changing plugs is crap... OEM or aftermarket... And it's not that hard to cut the plug off, solder a new lead with a new plug on and use shrinktube to seal it...

When referring to the electical manual on the unit, remember to check whether the diagram is plug side or RR side.

Oh yea thanks for that. I'm hopeing to find a unit with the plug and wires already in the plug so all i have to do is cut my plug off and splice the wires together. I'm a little uneasy about working on electrical stuff as i'm afraid of screwing it up. I figure the less I need to do means the less mistakes I will make.
