Popping airbox

Hello
Took the Hawk to the only twisty road i know to try out my new tires and had an amazing time. The way this bike makes it`s power is just about perfect. But i do seem to have abit of a problem, did a search and from what i learnt it seems i`m running lean. The problem is what i think you`d call backfireing though the carbs. If i push the bike hard in second or third it feels like the chain is slipping and i can also feel rapidfire popping though the tank like a little guy with a machinegun in my airbox. It happens almost half of the time. The bike has a k&n filter which i resently cleaned as well as hindle pipes.Really don`t need the bike to go any faster but would love it to run smooth. Thanks in advance for any advice!

It`s not cutting out just the popping i described when on the power and yes there is a loss of power. One other thing i forgot to say at lower constant revs she surges alittle like someone here described as sort of fighting herself.

You got carb issues, sounds lean. Pilot jets, needles or something. Do you know if it's been jetted?

RCVTR is an unknown quantity at this point
I'd start with a stock air filter.

a few people have had good luck with K&Ns, but only after significant jetting adjustments.

Thanks for the advice
Think i`ll start with a stock air filter, have read here that rejetting can be a real pain in the ***.Plus again from what i`ve read on here the K&N really only improves the top end something I`m really not bothered with. Thanks again.
